Course & Elevation

From the start at Ballindamm the course crosses the Kennedybrücke onto the Außenalster and follows the eastern shore along An der Alster, Schwanenwik and on towards Bellevue on the north shore, where the course's only aid station sits at around the six kilometre mark.

At the north end the route crosses to the west shore and takes a short detour via Agnesstraße and Blumenstraße before continuing down Fernsicht and Harvestehuder Weg on the west side back towards the city centre. Alsterufer and a second pass over the Kennedybrücke close the loop back at Ballindamm.

The course is continuously paved, fully closed to traffic during the race, and with only around ten metres of elevation difference it is practically flat. From the Kennedybrücke you get a view of the Alster fountain with Jungfernstieg behind it, and the rest of the lap passes sailboats and lakeside villas.

Pacing Strategy

On a course this flat, with no climbs worth naming, your own sense of pace decides the race, not the terrain. There's no hill to naturally sort the field and none to recover behind either.

The race is decided less by any single section than by your ability to hold pace evenly across the full distance. The one exposed stretch, along the open water on the east shore, can turn into a real factor if there's wind and no sheltering shoreline to block it.

The main trap is starting too fast in the dense field right after the Kennedybrücke: as one of the largest 10K races in Europe, the pull of the crowd in the opening kilometres is considerable, and anyone who gets carried along by it pays for it by the second third of the course.

Training plan for CURREX Alsterlauf Hamburg: 12-week build

For most age-group runners the 10K means an effort of roughly 35 to 55 minutes, with ambitious athletes well under that. Because the course is practically flat, you run the entire distance at one constant intensity near threshold, without the natural changes in effort a hilly course would impose.

That very evenness is what makes the preparation demanding: there's no section forcing a change of pace and none to recover on. The race comes down to your ability to hold the chosen pace without a break.

Threshold runs and tempo efforts at planned race pace form the core of the preparation, backed by shorter intervals just above race pace to build a bit of pace reserve for the second half of the course.

Because the route runs along open water, it's also worth training in wind occasionally, to get a feel for holding pace against a crosswind on the exposed east side of the loop.
