Course & Elevation

The start is at 10:30 at the Volksschule Maria Neustift at 606 metres, and from there the road only goes up: this is a pure hill climb with no meaningful descent at all, finishing at the Freithofbergalm at 949 metres.

The first 1.7 kilometres run on the paved Freithofbergstrasse at an average of eight percent - the section that carries the first relay handover. Then comes the Gueterstrasse Freithofberg: about a kilometre uphill to the level of the Grosskrifter farm, then some 700 gentler metres to the second changeover at kilometre 3.4, where the asphalt ends.

The rest is gravel. The steepest ramps of the day sit in the final 1.7 kilometres - the hardest half-kilometre averages 12.6 percent from kilometre 4.3 - before a short steep forest section and two switchbacks lead to the hut. 343 metres of climbing over a little more than five kilometres in total.

Pacing Strategy

On a course that climbs from the first minute to the last, how you spend your effort matters more than your stride. The first 1.7 kilometres of asphalt still feel runnable at eight percent - and that is exactly where the race is lost if you run to pace rather than to breathing.

The flatter stretch between kilometre 2.7 and 3.4 is the only place to bring your heart rate down. Use it deliberately instead of attacking there.

From the gravel at kilometre 3.4 onwards only steady power counts. On the steepest ramps around kilometre 4.3 a brisk hike is often more economical than a laboured run; arriving there in the red costs more time on the way to the hut than a controlled start ever would.

Training plan for Bike or Run Maria Neustift: 12-week build

Prepare for one long climb, not for a distance. Two hill sessions a week are enough: longer repetitions of eight to twelve minutes at six to nine percent for the asphalt section, and short, steeper intervals on gravel or forest track for the finale.

Practise switching between running and fast uphill hiking so the transition is no longer a decision on race day. One or two runs over the full distance with around 340 metres of climbing will teach you the pace you can still hold at the top.

There is no descending - you do not need downhill running in your preparation for this race.

Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
