The Granfondo Squali starts beside the aquarium in Cattolica, loops 126 kilometres through the hills of Romagna and the Montefeltro, and finishes high at Gabicce Monte above the Adriatic. The start is on Corso Italia at 07:30, and the first twenty kilometres are still prelude: a ramp at kilometre twelve, the castle at Gradara shortly after, then a second rise at kilometre 20. At kilometre 24, in Saludecio, the two competitive routes separate - the long one stays low and carries on into the Valconca.\n\nThe hard part sits between kilometre 47 and 56: first Monte Altavelio, a good three kilometres at eight per cent for 257 metres of gain, then almost immediately another three at six and a half. That is the route's high point at 622 metres, and where the field sorts itself out. Two further blocks follow - nearly four kilometres at six per cent at kilometre 76, and two more at a good six at kilometre 97 - before the road runs back through Tavullia towards the coast.\n\nThe ending is the real reason to ride here: the last fifteen kilometres take the Panoramica through the Monte San Bartolo nature park, the clifftop road above the sea, past Fiorenzuola di Focara and Casteldimezzo, on a profile that saws between forty and nearly two hundred metres - and then climbs to the finish at Gabicce Monte. Around it runs a three-day festival, with about 3,150 finishers the year before and an expo beside the aquarium; the finish feed is blue fish and piadina rather than gel.",{"de":221,"en":222},"Die ersten 24 Kilometer bis Saludecio fährt das ganze Feld zusammen, und sie sind schnell. The whole field rides the first 24 kilometres to Saludecio together, and they are fast. Sitting in the front group there because the road is rolling is paid for on the Altavelio. Treat the run to the split as an approach rather than a race - the 08:30 cut-off at that point is never tight for a properly trained rider.\n\nThe day is decided between kilometre 47 and 56. The Altavelio demands twelve to twenty minutes at your limit, and the second climb comes too soon to recover from it. Ride the first one knowing you will have to work again immediately at the top - because you will.\n\nThe second half rewards whoever has something left: the blocks at kilometre 76 and 97 are shorter but meet tired legs, and then comes the stretch where plenty of races fall apart - the Panoramica above the sea, rolling, exposed and windy, with the climb to Gabicce Monte at the end. The finish closes at 13:30. Ride the clifftop road in a group, eat before it, and deliberately keep something for the final kilometre.",{"de":224,"en":225},"Für eine Altersklassenleistung sind das viereinhalb bis sechseinhalb Stunden mit rund 1.900 Höhenmetern. For an age-group rider this is four and a half to six and a half hours with around 1,900 metres of climbing. The character is not that of a mountain stage but of a rolling race: eight climbs of between one and four kilometres, constant changes, barely any real recovery - a good third of the route is flat and the rest goes up or down.\n\nTraining therefore centres on repeated medium climbs: intervals of eight to twenty minutes at threshold, three to five of them inside one long ride, with short descents between. A single long mountain pass prepares you worse for this course than five clean hill repetitions.\n\nTwo things are specific. First the Altavelio-plus-follow-up pairing - deliberately train pairs of climbs with only a few minutes of descent between them. Second the closing fifteen kilometres: rolling, exposed coastal terrain after more than a hundred kilometres. Put the broken ground at the end of your long rides, not in the middle.\n\nMid-May on the Adriatic is mild to warm, and the clifftop road is open to the sea breeze. For many riders this is the first warm ride of the year: fluid and salt belong in the plan, and your last long sessions should not all happen at ten degrees in spring Bei Kilometer 26 kommt die Teilung, und von da an ist es eine eigene Strecke: Der Mediofondo klettert nach Saludecio hinauf, während die Langstrecke unten weiterfährt.\n\nDas Profil ist gleichmäßiger als das der langen Runde. At kilometre 26 the split comes, and from there it is its own route: the Mediofondo climbs up into Saludecio while the long course carries on below.\n\nThe profile is more even than the long loop's. Eight climbs spread across the route, the steepest just under seven per cent at kilometre 34, the longest nearly four kilometres at a good four per cent at kilometre 50. The high point is 391 metres, against the long route's 622. What is missing is Monte Altavelio: the Mediofondo never comes within ten kilometres of it.\n\nThe ending is shared with everyone else: the rolling last kilometres above the sea and the climb to the finish at Gabicce Monte. This too is a competitive classification, not a tourist option. And here as well the organiser's own numbers were long inconsistent - 85 kilometres in an older regulation, 81 on the newer pages. Its own track measures 80.5 km, which settles it in favour of the newer figures.",{"de":405,"en":406},"Weil kein einzelner Anstieg heraussticht, ist die Versuchung groß, den ganzen Tag im gleichen harten Tempo zu fahren. Because no single climb stands out, the temptation is to ride the whole day at the same hard pace. That is exactly what goes wrong: eight climbs with no real recovery between them accumulate, and the course gives you no mountain on which to notice you went too hard - it tells you at kilometre 65 instead.\n\nFor the first 26 kilometres you ride among the long-course riders, who have rationed themselves for 128 kilometres. Do not catch their pace - for you that stretch is a far larger share of your race.\n\nThe decisive section runs from kilometre 50 to 67: the route's longest climb, then two shorter ones on tired legs. The demand is evenly rolling: a lot of time just under threshold, little genuine recovery, no long passes.\n\nTrain repetitions rather than length: intervals of five to fifteen minutes at threshold, four to six within one ride, with short easy sections between. Long base rides alone do not prepare you for that rhythm.\n\nTwo course-specific things repay work. First riding in big groups: you spend the first 26 kilometres in a dense, fast field, and riders unused to that waste energy there. Second rolling terrain at the end of a long ride - the last fifteen kilometres of this race are exactly that.\n\nMid-May on the Adriatic is mild to warm, with a sea breeze on the clifftop road. Wer den Tag als Genussfahrt plant, plant ihn richtig - die Uhr läuft hier für niemanden.","A non-competitive ride still has a rhythm, and this one rolls more than its distance suggests. The first ten kilometres are flat and quick because the whole field is still together - ride them calmly, or you will start the only longer climb, at kilometre 18, already tired.\n\nThat climb, three kilometres at four and a half per cent, is where it pays to find an even tempo rather than chase wheels. Tavullia and the VR46 stop follow, which is a good moment to eat and drink - several short ramps still come after it.\n\nThe ending is the same for all three routes: the climb to Gabicce Monte above the sea. After not quite fifty kilometres it is manageable, but it is the one point of the ride where you genuinely need something left. Two to three hours with a good 700 metres of climbing, and no timing - the most accessible distance of the weekend and a good first granfondo day. The demand is a long, even endurance ride with a few short climbs, no more.\n\nIf you ride two hours at a stretch regularly, you are broadly ready. What helps is a few 50 to 60 kilometre rides beforehand so the distance feels familiar, and one or two sessions on rolling terrain - the course has eight small climbs, and riders who only ride flat roads underestimate how they add up.\n\nThe thing genuinely worth practising is riding in a group: the start goes off with a large field, and for many at this distance that is the least familiar part of the day - holding a line, pedalling smoothly, not braking and re-accelerating.\n\nMid-May on the Adriatic is mild, but the coastal roads are open to the wind, and for riders from the north this is often the first warm ride of the year. Carry more to drink than you would for two and a half hours at home, and allow more total time than the riding alone suggests - the stop in Tavullia is part of it.",[578],{"eventName":6,"eventDate":9,"eventHomepageUrl":11},[580,588,596,605,613,622],{"slug":581,"eventName":582,"proseName":583,"city":584,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":585,"distanceInMeters":586,"elevationGainInMeters":587,"classification":25},"nova-eroica-buonconvento","Nova Eroica Buonconvento",{"de":582,"en":582},"Buonconvento","2027-04-11T00:00:00.000Z",131100,2325,{"slug":589,"eventName":590,"proseName":591,"city":592,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":593,"distanceInMeters":594,"elevationGainInMeters":595,"classification":25},"gran-fondo-strade-bianche","Gran Fondo Strade Bianche",{"de":590,"en":590},"Siena","2027-03-07T00:00:00.000Z",137700,2382,{"slug":597,"eventName":598,"proseName":599,"city":600,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":601,"distanceInMeters":602,"elevationGainInMeters":603,"classification":604},"eroica-montalcino","Eroica Montalcino",{"de":598,"en":598},"Montalcino","2027-05-30T00:00:00.000Z",151600,3115,"HILLY",{"slug":606,"eventName":607,"proseName":608,"city":609,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":610,"distanceInMeters":611,"elevationGainInMeters":612,"classification":25},"prosecco-cycling","Prosecco Cycling",{"de":607,"en":607},"Valdobbiadene","2026-09-27T00:00:00.000Z",100000,1790,{"slug":614,"eventName":615,"proseName":616,"city":617,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":618,"distanceInMeters":619,"elevationGainInMeters":620,"classification":621},"nove-colli","Granfondo Nove Colli",{"de":615,"en":615},"Cesenatico","2027-05-23T00:00:00.000Z",200000,4053,"MOUNTAINOUS",{"slug":623,"eventName":624,"proseName":625,"city":626,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":627,"distanceInMeters":628,"elevationGainInMeters":629,"classification":604},"letape-mondovi","L'Étape Mondovì by Tour de France",{"de":624,"en":624},"Mondovì","2026-09-20T00:00:00.000Z",110720,2050,1789876210393]
