The Granfondo La Fausto Coppi is the long loop out of Cuneo, and one of the hardest granfondos in Italy: 172 kilometres taking in the Colle di Sampeyre, the Colle Fauniera via the Colle d'Esischie and the Madonna del Colletto. The field leaves Piazza Galimberti at seven, and after just a kilometre and a half, beyond the Viadotto Soleri, the Granfondo splits from the two shorter routes and turns right towards Busca. Twenty near-flat kilometres later the Colletta di Rossana arrives at km 20, not quite two kilometres at 5.4 per cent, the gateway into the Valle Varaita. The road then drags gently up the valley through Venasca, Brossasco, Melle and Frassino to Sampeyre, where at km 49 the day really starts: 15.3 kilometres averaging 8.6 per cent and 1,312 metres of climbing to 2,284 metres. The Colle di Sampeyre was dropped from the route after 2013 for more than a decade, because the road was too narrow and the surface broken in places, and only returned in 2025, at the riders' request, once both the climb and the descent had been resurfaced.\n\nWhat follows is the 17.7-kilometre fast, technical descent into the Valle Maira. From km 87 the second block begins, and it begins nastily: three short steps around Marmora, the first 900 metres at 11.5 per cent, with ramps beyond 28 per cent. From km 94 come 9.7 kilometres at 7.5 per cent to the Colle d'Esischie at 2,370 metres, and from km 104 a final 5.2 kilometres at 7.3 per cent to the Colle Fauniera at 2,481 metres, the high point of the race, with the Marco Pantani monument at the top. The pass road is asphalt but narrow and patched; it is a municipal mountain road that stays closed through the winter and only opens in early June. Through its \"Salviamo le strade di montagna\" project the organiser has funded asphalt, masonry and cyclist signage on these very passes for years.\n\nFrom the Fauniera it is 25 kilometres of descent to Demonte in the Valle Stura. There, at km 137, the last task waits: 6.5 kilometres at 8.6 per cent up to the Madonna del Colletto at 1,304 metres. The course then drops into the Valle Gesso to Valdieri, runs on through Borgo San Dalmazzo and back to Cuneo. Measured, it is 170.7 kilometres and 4,749 metres of climbing against the advertised 172 kilometres and 4,330 metres; only 19 per cent of the route is flat and almost 15 per cent is steep uphill.",{"de":223,"en":224},"Der Fehler auf dieser Runde wird in den ersten fünfzig Kilometern gemacht. The mistake on this loop is made in the first fifty kilometres. From Cuneo to Sampeyre the road is flat to gently rising, the field is still together, and in a big bunch at low speed it is easy to ride twenty watts too many. Arrive at the foot of the Sampeyre already in the red and you still have 120 kilometres and three passes ahead. Treat the opening as an approach rather than a race, and eat more there than feels necessary; the feed at the bottom of the Sampeyre is the last easy chance before an hour and a half of climbing.\n\nThe race is decided between km 87 and km 109, not on the Sampeyre. The three steep steps around Marmora come after the long descent on cold legs and carry ramps beyond 25 per cent; you need gearing that lets you stay seated here, or you will lose the legs for the 15 kilometres of Esischie and Fauniera that follow immediately. The upper part sits above 2,000 metres, where power drops measurably and a pace that worked at 1,500 metres becomes an overdraft at 2,400. Deliberately plan the final kilometres to the Fauniera slower.\n\nThe descent off the Fauniera is 25 kilometres long, narrow and patchy in places, with grit in the shaded corners. It is a concentration problem, not a rest, and after two hours of climbing the cold airflow chills you badly. Carry a wind vest over the pass. The Madonna del Colletto at km 137 is the shortest of the big climbs at 6.5 kilometres, but it arrives after more than 4,000 metres of climbing and is steadily steep at 8.6 per cent; riding it rather than surviving it depends on the discipline you kept on the Fauniera.",{"de":226,"en":227},"Für eine Altersklassenfahrerin oder einen Altersklassenfahrer sind hier je nach Form sieben bis zehn Stunden im Sattel realistisch; die Marschtabellen des Veranstalters reichen von knapp fünf bis über elf Stunden. For an age-group rider, seven to ten hours in the saddle is realistic depending on form; the organiser's pacing tables run from just under five to over eleven. Despite the racing, the demand is mostly steady aerobic work: three long climbs of ninety minutes to two hours define the day, with two very long descents between them where you barely pedal. Almost fifteen per cent of the course is steep uphill, and the short ramps at Marmora beyond 25 per cent are the only genuine anaerobic spikes.\n\nThe goal of preparation is therefore not snap but the ability to produce a good climb after five hours of riding. Build long rides with the climbing loaded into the final third rather than tackling the hills fresh at the start. That is exactly what the Esischie/Fauniera sequence at km 94 and the Madonna del Colletto at km 137 demand. One or two spring rides above 3,500 metres of climbing, and at least one over six hours, belong in the plan.\n\nConditions are the second training theme. Late June is warm to hot on the valley floor around Cuneo while the Fauniera at 2,481 metres and the Sampeyre at 2,284 can be cold, windy or in cloud. You need both: heat tolerance for the long approaches and a clothing plan for two passes above 2,200 metres each followed by a long descent. If you can, ride above 2,000 metres several times beforehand so you know how far your own power falls off up there.\n\nFinally, equipment and skills. Choose your gearing for the Marmora steps and the Sampeyre's 8.6 per cent average, not for the average of the whole loop. The Mediofondo at the Granfondo La Fausto Coppi is not a shortened race but a race with two climbs: 111 kilometres in which the Colle Fauniera rises from the valley floor to 2,481 metres in one continuous effort, and the Madonna del Colletto lands a second blow at the end. The start is the same as the long loop's, seven o'clock in Piazza Galimberti, but past the Viadotto Soleri the Mediofondo keeps left, through Cervasca, Bernezzo and Caraglio into the Valle Grana. The first twenty kilometres rise almost imperceptibly from 543 to a little over 700 metres, and that imperceptibility is the trap: the climb has long since begun before it feels like one. From km 20 the road turns stepped through Valgrana, Monterosso Grana and Pradleves, with four short ramps between 5 and 9 per cent and pitches beyond 30 per cent, before the serious work starts at the Santuario di Castelmagno.\n\nFrom there it is 8.95 kilometres averaging 9.3 per cent, then a further 5.45 kilometres at 8.8 per cent to the Colle Fauniera, which the organiser advertises as 22.3 kilometres and 1,689 metres of climbing. The summit comes at km 47 at 2,481 metres, where the Marco Pantani monument stands, the reason the Fauniera is this race's emblem. The road is asphalt but narrow and patched; seven kilometres from the Santuario to the Colle d'Esischie have been resurfaced, grit collects in the shaded hairpins, and the municipal road stays closed by winter until early June.\n\nThen 25 kilometres fall away to Demonte in the Valle Stura. At km 75 the second climb begins, the Madonna del Colletto, 7.05 kilometres at 8.2 per cent to 1,304 metres, with a feed station at its foot in Festiona and another at the top. From there the route drops into the Valle Gesso to Valdieri, runs through Borgo San Dalmazzo and back to Cuneo, where a pasta party waits at the finish on Piazza Galimberti. Measured it is 108.1 kilometres and 2,908 metres of climbing against the advertised 111 kilometres and 2,510 metres; a full 19 per cent of the route is flat.",{"de":415,"en":416},"Diese Runde hat eine ungewöhnlich einfache Struktur: ein Riesenanstieg, eine lange Abfahrt, ein Schlussanstieg. This loop has an unusually simple structure: one giant climb, one long descent, one final climb. And that is exactly why it is easy to ride badly. The twenty kilometres from Cuneo to Valgrana look flat but rise steadily; in the shelter of a big group you cover them far too fast and only notice at the Santuario. Set yourself a hard ceiling there: you are about to climb continuously for ninety minutes to two hours.\n\nThe Fauniera decides everything. Its steepest section is not at the top but in the middle, around Castelmagno, at 9.3 per cent for nine kilometres; higher up the gradient eases slightly, but you are above 2,000 metres, where power falls away anyway. Ride that middle section like a time trial and you pay for it twice in the last five kilometres. Plan a deliberately lower wattage above 2,000 metres and take the course's 14 per cent of steep uphill seriously; almost all of it sits in this one climb.\n\nThe 25-kilometre descent is the second test: narrow, patched in places, with grit in shaded corners, and after the long climb the airflow chills you hard. A wind vest carried over the pass is not caution but the condition for the Madonna del Colletto at km 75 still being rideable. That last climb is steady at 8.2 per cent with no respite; a small gear and a constant cadence get you over the top faster than any attempt to win back lost time.",{"de":418,"en":419},"Rechne als Altersklassenfahrer mit etwa viereinhalb bis sechseinhalb Stunden. The demand is that of a long mountain time trial with a coda: around two hours of near-continuous climbing on the Fauniera, then a long descending recovery, then another three quarters of an hour at a stretch. There are almost no anaerobic spikes, apart from the short ramps around Pradleves that touch 30 per cent, where gearing matters more than form.\n\nThe training emphasis is therefore threshold power sustained over time, not interval sharpness. Ride climbs of sixty to ninety unbroken minutes at even intensity, repeatedly, and if your region has no such mountain, substitute long steady blocks on whatever gradient you have or into a flat headwind. The second core quality is repeatability: the Madonna del Colletto after three and a half hours is only trained by putting a hard climb at the end of a long ride in training too.\n\nConditions are more extreme on this loop than its distance suggests. The late-June start sits at 543 metres and often in summer warmth, the summit at 2,481 metres where it can be cold and windy, and between the two there is no gradual acclimatisation, just twenty-two kilometres of continuous ascent. Plan for a wind vest and gloves, practise drinking and eating while climbing, since only one feed station sits between Castelmagno and the summit, and get rides above 2,000 metres into your legs beforehand.\n\nFinally, the descent. Twenty-five kilometres on a narrow, patched pass road with grit in the hairpins is a training task of its own, and taking it on unpractised leaves you cold and tense at the foot of the last climb. The Fauniera Classic is the untimed route at the Granfondo La Fausto Coppi and the only one open to e-bikes: 101 kilometres with exactly one climb, the Colle Fauniera at 2,481 metres. The way home from there runs on the old military road through the Valle Stura and is almost all downhill, so preparation is about one long ascent and nothing else.",{"de":591,"en":592},"Die Fauniera Classic ist als Hommage an die Symbolstraße des Rennens gedacht, und ihr Profil sagt genau das: ein Berg, sonst nichts. The Fauniera Classic is meant as a tribute to the road that symbolises the race, and its profile says exactly that: one mountain, nothing else. From the seven o'clock start on Piazza Galimberti the route turns left past the Viadotto Soleri through Cervasca, Bernezzo and Caraglio into the Valle Grana. For twenty kilometres the road rises almost imperceptibly, then turns stepped through Valgrana, Monterosso Grana and Pradleves with short ramps beyond 26 per cent, and from the Santuario di Castelmagno the long part begins: 8.95 kilometres at 9.3 per cent, then 5.5 kilometres at 8.7 per cent to the Colle Fauniera. The summit comes at km 47 at 2,481 metres, looking out over the Cottian Alps, with the Marco Pantani monument at the top.\n\nThen the ride tips over. From the pass the road drops long and technically to Demonte, and from there takes the \"via militare\" through the Valle Stura to Borgo San Dalmazzo and back to Cuneo. Past km 70 the profile stays under roughly 770 metres and keeps falling to the finish; the only rise worth naming is a kilometre-long swell at 6.3 per cent around km 81. Almost 22 per cent of the route is flat, the highest flat share of the three courses.\n\nThe finish is the same as for the Granfondo and Mediofondo: Piazza Galimberti in Cuneo, with the pasta party. There is no competition here, though: the regulations list the Fauniera Classic without a classification, without timing, and with a purely alphabetical result list. It is also the route for riders aged 71 and over, and the only one on which e-bikes are admitted. Without timing the task changes: it is not about being fast but about getting to the top and riding the descent safely. Even so there is exactly one place to get it wrong, and it comes before the mountain. The first twenty kilometres into the Valle Grana gain around 200 metres almost invisibly, and in a group they are nearly always ridden too fast. Half an hour saved here is paid back twice on the Fauniera.\n\nThe climb itself runs for twenty-two kilometres, with its steepest section around Castelmagno rather than at the end. Split it mentally at the Santuario: easy and seated up to there, then the smallest gear you own. Above 2,000 metres even a moderate pace becomes noticeably harder; that is normal and not something to fight. Only one feed station sits between Castelmagno and the summit, so drink and eat regularly on the lower slopes.\n\nThe descent is the part most easily underestimated on an untimed ride. The pass road is narrow, patched in places and carries grit in shaded hairpins, and after two hours of climbing the airflow cools you fast. Take a wind vest over the pass and ride the first hairpins deliberately slowly until your hands warm up. After that the ride is effectively over: from Demonte the via militare rolls gently downhill all the way home, and the only remaining job is to pedal steadily rather than burn yourself out in a fast group.",{"de":597,"en":598},"Auf 101 Kilometer mit 2.187 ausgeschriebenen Höhenmetern kommen die meisten in etwa viereinhalb bis sieben Stunden, je nachdem, wie viel Zeit an den Ristori und am Gipfel verbracht wird, und weil nicht gewertet wird, ist das eine legitime Bandbreite und keine Ausrede. Over 101 kilometres with 2,187 advertised metres of climbing, most riders take somewhere between four and a half and seven hours depending on how long they spend at the feed stations and on the summit, and since nothing is timed, that is a legitimate range rather than an excuse. The demand is as one-sided as a cycling profile gets: a good two thirds of the total climbing sits in a single ascent, and the rest of the route is the approach and the way home.\n\nThe training emphasis follows almost by itself. What matters is being able to climb for ninety to a hundred and twenty minutes without interruption and without going into the red. Long, calm climbs at endurance intensity build that better than short hard intervals. If you have no mountain long enough, ride the same shorter climb several times back to back with only the descent as recovery. The same applies in shortened form on an e-bike: the battery has to carry twenty-two kilometres of ascent, so a test ride at a realistic assistance level belongs in the plan.\n\nConditions deserve particular attention on this route, because many choose it as the \"easy\" option and still end up standing at 2,481 metres. In late June it can be cold, windy or foggy up there while Cuneo is in high summer below; the pass road is a municipal road, closed through the winter and only released in early June. Pack a wind vest, arm warmers and gloves, and practise eating and drinking on a long climb.\n\nFinally, handling. The descent from the Fauniera to Demonte is long, narrow and uneven in places; braking control, looking through tight hairpins and relaxed hands matter more there than strength. Put at least two or three longer mountain descents on comparable roads into your preparation, especially if you normally ride mostly on the flat.",[600],{"eventName":6,"eventDate":9,"eventHomepageUrl":11},[602,609,618,626,634,642],{"slug":603,"eventName":604,"proseName":605,"city":606,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":607,"distanceInMeters":608,"elevationGainInMeters":343,"classification":25},"granfondo-bra-bra","Granfondo Bra Bra Specialized - Fenix Grand Prix",{"de":604,"en":604},"Bra","2026-05-17T00:00:00.000Z",126300,{"slug":610,"eventName":611,"proseName":612,"city":613,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":614,"distanceInMeters":615,"elevationGainInMeters":616,"classification":617},"letape-mondovi","L'Étape Mondovì by Tour de France",{"de":611,"en":611},"Mondovì","2026-09-20T00:00:00.000Z",110720,2050,"HILLY",{"slug":619,"eventName":620,"proseName":621,"city":622,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":623,"distanceInMeters":624,"elevationGainInMeters":625,"classification":25},"bgy-airport-granfondo","BGY Airport Granfondo",{"de":620,"en":620},"Bergamo","2027-05-09T00:00:00.000Z",148000,3523,{"slug":627,"eventName":628,"proseName":629,"city":630,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":631,"distanceInMeters":632,"elevationGainInMeters":633,"classification":25},"nove-colli","Granfondo Nove Colli",{"de":628,"en":628},"Cesenatico","2027-05-23T00:00:00.000Z",200000,4053,{"slug":635,"eventName":636,"proseName":637,"city":638,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":639,"distanceInMeters":640,"elevationGainInMeters":641,"classification":25},"sportful-dolomiti-race","Sportful Dolomiti Race",{"de":636,"en":636},"Feltre","2027-06-20T00:00:00.000Z",203639,6108,{"slug":643,"eventName":644,"proseName":645,"city":646,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":647,"distanceInMeters":648,"elevationGainInMeters":649,"classification":25},"granfondo-gavia-e-mortirolo","GranFondo Gavia e Mortirolo",{"de":644,"en":644},"Ponte di Legno","2026-07-05T00:00:00.000Z",141250,3552,1789876198116]
