Your opponent here is not gradient, it is wind.",{"de":127,"en":128},"Um 9 Uhr geht es auf dem Usk Way los, direkt am Fluss und neben dem Campus der University of South Wales. Way.","The race sets off at 09:00 on Usk Way, right on the river beside the University of South Wales campus. The opening kilometre and a half is a parade lap of a city centre closed for the day: up Kingsway and Skinner Street past the Victorian Market at kilometre 0.5 and Newport Castle at kilometre 0.9, then back down past a start arch still packed with spectators. At kilometre 3.4 you cross the Usk on the City Bridge – at 17 metres the highest point of the entire day – and run into the International Sports Village, past the Geraint Thomas National Velodrome, through Newport Stadium for a lap of the running track, and on past Dragon Park.\n\nAt kilometre 7.7 the city stops. Broad Street Common runs dead straight east across the Gwent Levels, a grid of drainage reens, grazing pasture and medieval villages lying only a few metres above sea level and designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The turnaround comes at kilometre 15.4, just short of Redwick. Back to the west, Whitson Common Road and Goldcliff Road take you twice around the same loop past the Newport Wetlands nature reserve and the village of Goldcliff – at kilometre 22.9 and again at kilometre 31.9. That is precisely what the 2024 redesign was for: instead of the quiet lanes of the old course, you now pass the course entertainment zone twice.\n\nThe last six kilometres head back into the city on Nash Road and Traston Road. At kilometre 40.1 the only genuine ramp of the race begins: 700 metres at 1.4 per cent and ten metres of climbing up onto the City Bridge. From the top it is another 1.6 kilometres along the Usk, the Transporter Bridge in silhouette ahead, to the finish on Usk Way.",{"de":130,"en":131},"95 Prozent der Strecke sind flach, es gibt keinen einzigen steilen Meter, und der Kurs verlässt das Band zwischen fünf und siebzehn Metern über dem Meer nie. This is a race about even kilometre splits – and about the discipline not to read the city-centre parade lap as your pace. Closed roads, the whole field still bunched, and the small rise by Newport Castle at 900 metres make that first loop quicker than it feels. Twenty seconds spent there are not coming back on the Levels.\n\nThe race is decided between kilometres 8 and 20 on Broad Street Common. The transition is abrupt: crowds on the barriers one moment, then a dead-straight road across open marsh with barely a spectator and not a tree or a building to break the wind. Because the section is run as an out-and-back, the lead group comes past you the other way, and the pull to set your pace by theirs is strong. Make the wind your reference instead: one half of that leg is into it and the other has it behind, and the pace can differ sharply between them as long as the effort does not.\n\nThe real trap sits at kilometre 23. The first time through Goldcliff and the entertainment zone it sounds and feels like the closing stage – in fact you have 19 kilometres and an entire second lap of the same landscape left. Plan that point as halfway, not as the finish. And keep something back for the 700 metres onto the City Bridge from kilometre 40.1: ten metres of climbing at 1.4 per cent, but after forty completely flat kilometres your legs work there in a way nothing all day has prepared them for.",{"de":133,"en":134},"Für Altersklassenläuferinnen und -läufer liegt die Renndauer typischerweise zwischen knapp drei und fünfeinhalb Stunden; das Zeitlimit beträgt sechs Stunden, ein Besenbus sammelt dahinter auf, und das Mindestalter ist 18. For an age-group runner the race typically takes between just under three and five and a half hours; the cut-off is six hours, a sweep bus collects anyone behind it, and the minimum age is 18. Pacers run from 3:00 to 4:30. The effort is aerobic throughout and unusually uniform: no climb forces a change of muscular work, no descent hands you a break, no change of surface interrupts the rhythm. For forty kilometres you are the only thing holding the pace.\n\nPreparation therefore centres on sustained flat speed rather than hill work. Weekly threshold sessions, long runs carrying marathon-pace blocks of ten to fifteen kilometres, and progressive sessions where goal pace sits at the end rather than the start match the demand exactly. Hill training is close to unnecessary for this course – with one exception, below.\n\nConditions are the second training input. Mid-April in south Wales is mild but frequently wet and almost always breezy, and the Gwent Levels are open, drained marshland with no shelter at all. Deliberately put long runs into windy weather and practise governing pace by effort rather than by the watch on a straight, featureless road. With a 09:00 start, a rehearsed breakfast and fuelling routine and a few sessions in that exact window belong in the plan; water is on every course, with gels and sports drink additionally on the marathon and half marathon.\n\nTwo quirks deserve targeted work. First, the closing ramp: add a 700-metre rise of around one and a half per cent to the end of long runs, taken at race pace on tired legs – that is the City Bridge at kilometre 40.1. Second, the repetition: the course runs the same Goldcliff loop twice, and long sessions on a loop you already know prepare you for the mental half of that better than any new route does. If you are here for a personal best – close to 70 per cent of all finishers in the race's history have set one on this course – test the goal time on a flat half marathon or 10K beforehand rather than discovering it on the day.",{"raceName":136,"kind":17,"hasTrack":18,"composedLegs":19,"startDate":20,"leg":19,"legGroup":19,"distanceInMeters":137,"elevationGainInMeters":138,"format":23,"profile":139,"intro":226,"description":229,"pacing":232,"training":235},"Half Marathon",21097,39,{"classification":25,"routeShape":26,"totalAscentM":138,"totalDescentM":138,"netElevationM":27,"vertPerKm":140,"climbs":141,"remainingVertM":27,"gradientDistribution":142,"downsampledProfile":146,"trackPolyline":225},1.8,[],{"flatPct":143,"upPct":144,"downPct":145,"steepUpPct":27,"steepDownPct":27},91,4.3,4.7,[147,148,150,151,153,154,156,157,159,161,163,165,167,169,171,173,175,177,179,181,183,185,188,190,192,194,196,198,200,202,204,206,208,210,212,214,216,219,221,223],{"km":27,"elevM":36},{"km":149,"elevM":39},0.55,{"km":38,"elevM":39},{"km":152,"elevM":42},1.65,{"km":41,"elevM":42},{"km":155,"elevM":42},2.73,{"km":44,"elevM":45},{"km":158,"elevM":48},3.83,{"km":160,"elevM":48},4.38,{"km":162,"elevM":58},4.93,{"km":164,"elevM":51},5.48,{"km":166,"elevM":51},6.03,{"km":168,"elevM":51},6.55,{"km":170,"elevM":51},7.1,{"km":172,"elevM":51},7.65,{"km":174,"elevM":51},8.2,{"km":176,"elevM":58},8.75,{"km":178,"elevM":58},9.3,{"km":180,"elevM":58},9.85,{"km":182,"elevM":58},10.4,{"km":184,"elevM":58},10.93,{"km":186,"elevM":187},11.48,5,{"km":189,"elevM":58},12.03,{"km":191,"elevM":51},12.58,{"km":193,"elevM":51},13.13,{"km":195,"elevM":51},13.68,{"km":197,"elevM":58},14.23,{"km":199,"elevM":51},14.78,{"km":201,"elevM":51},15.3,{"km":203,"elevM":51},15.85,{"km":205,"elevM":51},16.4,{"km":207,"elevM":51},16.95,{"km":209,"elevM":115},17.5,{"km":211,"elevM":115},18.05,{"km":213,"elevM":115},18.6,{"km":215,"elevM":115},19.15,{"km":217,"elevM":218},19.68,17,{"km":220,"elevM":36},20.23,{"km":222,"elevM":36},20.78,{"km":224,"elevM":36},21.33,"mdzyH~yfQuG~MwGlK{AhEYC@~F|@~CiG~AiA]mAeDf@mChHqE?gArF_H~@{D`CoCtR}\\|HgE~@sAzBfA~D_BxT}]eBcLk@sKc@_^f@kHvHyc@zCEvBtAjEXNqFc@iBmAy@c@qDHsCcEiB@oCl@m@`E`Cz@mAh@Zs@pHb@RvELx@gBlA`ApDc@dDgFmEoHsLmMk@yEnOoA`JgIlHyL`MqDbG{Gf@qC~CKrDiBDyLwB}RhMeTvAkI`CoD\\aBiD_[gEwKuFsShRaX|DZ`IyCdD_DbGlG`HpBjBrBvDa@|Dz@dE?z@sBbDk@`DkDdBgGjKoNlEsI|@e@`AnGnAjX{@tc@sIjX{@vH}EnWoE|K]~BqMvJaTnKaOtDwFvDeLvC{F~FsFfAoFfC_DJg@pCcGzGaMpDmHxLaJfIoOnAj@xErLlMxDhG~@xCpHfKhBjJtAle@yAb@gFQol@uDiFiAaAdLb@~]\\dIrBpNqSf]kCjByGr@yF|CwLjR",{"de":227,"en":228},"Der ABP Newport Half teilt sich Startzeit, Startlinie und die ersten acht Kilometer mit dem Marathon und biegt dann in eine einzige Schleife durch die Newport Wetlands ab. 39 Höhenmeter auf 21,3 Kilometern und 91 Prozent flaches Terrain machen ihn zu einer der ehrlichsten Bestzeitstrecken in Wales – vorausgesetzt, du lässt dich am Anfang nicht von Läuferinnen und Läufern mitziehen, die noch 21 Kilometer länger unterwegs sind.","The ABP Newport Half shares its start time, its start line and its first eight kilometres with the marathon, then peels off into a single loop through the Newport Wetlands. The distance has only existed since 2024, when the race was expanded into a marathon festival and every course was redrawn. The half starts at 09:00 alongside the marathon on Usk Way and runs its entire opening: the parade lap of the closed city centre with the Victorian Market at kilometre 0.5 and Newport Castle at kilometre 0.9, back past the start, over the City Bridge at kilometre 3.4 and through the International Sports Village with its lap of the Newport Stadium track and the velodrome.\n\nTraston Road and Nash Road bring you out onto the Gwent Levels at kilometre 7.7. This is where the two races part: the marathon carries on east, while the half turns off Broad Street Common after barely a kilometre and a half and runs a single loop through the Newport Wetlands nature reserve on Chapel Road and Goldcliff Road. Goldcliff comes at kilometre 11.8, almost exactly halfway, and the course entertainment there is the loudest point of the second half of the race. All around is drained grazing land behind the Severn sea wall, a few metres above the sea, with the reserve's coastal wildlife in the reens.\n\nNash Road and Traston Road take you back into the city. At kilometre 19.0 the ramp onto the City Bridge begins – 700 metres, ten metres of climbing, 1.4 per cent – and from the crest at 17 metres it is another 1.6 kilometres along the river to the finish on Usk Way, the Transporter Bridge downstream in view.",{"de":233,"en":234},"Auf einem Kurs ohne einen einzigen Anstieg entscheidet die Verteilung des Aufwands über die Zielzeit, nicht die Krafteinteilung am Berg. On a course without a single climb, the finish time is decided by how effort is distributed, not by how strength is managed on a hill. The first eight kilometres are the delicate part, and for a reason that has nothing to do with the profile: you run them in a combined field with the marathon. A large share of the people around you have twice the job ahead and are running accordingly conservatively, another share is at half-marathon pace, and on the same road the two are indistinguishable. Run these kilometres by the watch and by feel, not by your neighbours.\n\nThe race is decided between kilometres 10 and 16 in the Wetlands loop. That is where the course is quietest, straightest and most exposed: open marsh, no shelter, thin crowds. If you took the first eight kilometres too hard in the noise of the city centre and the Sports Village, this is exactly where it comes back, a second at a time – the fade does not feel dramatic, it only shows on the watch.\n\nThe last trap is the City Bridge. After nineteen near-level kilometres, a 700-metre ramp at 1.4 per cent costs more out of full race pace than ten metres of climbing suggests. Take it as its own section, settle back onto the flat at the top without rushing, and run the final 1.6 kilometres along the Usk out. Add the time of day: 09:00 in April is cool and often damp, with a long wait in the start pen that throwaway layers are worth having for.",{"de":236,"en":237},"Rechne mit einer Renndauer zwischen etwa 75 Minuten und knapp drei Stunden; das Zeitlimit liegt bei vier Stunden, das Mindestalter bei 17, und Pacer gehen von 1:30 bis 3:00 los. Wer den Halbmarathon als Formtest im Marathonaufbau nutzt, findet hier wegen der Flachheit einen ungewöhnlich sauberen Messwert.","Expect a race lasting between roughly 75 minutes and just under three hours; the cut-off is four hours, the minimum age is 17, and pacers run from 1:30 to 3:00. Physiologically this is a race just below or at threshold, run without any interruption: no rise to push the heart rate up, no descent to bring it back. That uniformity is exactly what makes the distance harder here than the profile looks.\n\nIn training that means threshold work comes first. Two to three weeks of classic tempo runs of 20 to 40 minutes, plus intervals at goal race pace with short recoveries, match the demand better than any hill session. Long runs of 90 to 120 minutes with a goal-pace block in the final third additionally prepare you for the decisive stretch in the Wetlands loop.\n\nConditions belong in the plan. The Gwent Levels are open, drained marshland; the wind off the Severn has a clear run at you there, and mid-April can be expected to be cool, damp and gusty. A few quality sessions into a headwind on a straight road are worth more for this course than another set of hill repeats. Practise drinking on the move too – water is on every course, with gels and sports drink additionally on the half marathon.\n\nTwo things are specific to this course. First, the shared start with the marathon: in your build-up, deliberately practise holding your own pace inside a dense, mixed field rather than taking it from the group. Second, the closing ramp – a few 600 to 800-metre efforts at around one and a half per cent tacked onto a hard session cover the City Bridge at kilometre 19 completely. If you use the half as a fitness test inside a marathon build-up, its flatness makes the reading unusually clean.",{"raceName":239,"kind":17,"hasTrack":18,"composedLegs":19,"startDate":20,"leg":19,"legGroup":19,"distanceInMeters":240,"elevationGainInMeters":241,"format":23,"profile":242,"intro":332,"description":335,"pacing":338,"training":341},"10K",10000,31,{"classification":25,"routeShape":26,"totalAscentM":241,"totalDescentM":243,"netElevationM":244,"vertPerKm":245,"climbs":246,"remainingVertM":27,"gradientDistribution":247,"downsampledProfile":251,"trackPolyline":331},30,1,3.1,[],{"flatPct":248,"upPct":249,"downPct":250,"steepUpPct":27,"steepDownPct":27},82,8.9,9.1,[252,253,255,258,261,263,265,267,269,271,273,275,277,279,281,283,285,287,289,291,293,295,296,298,300,302,304,306,308,310,312,314,316,318,320,322,323,325,327,329],{"km":27,"elevM":36},{"km":254,"elevM":42},0.25,{"km":256,"elevM":257},0.53,12,{"km":259,"elevM":260},0.78,14,{"km":262,"elevM":260},1.05,{"km":264,"elevM":257},1.3,{"km":266,"elevM":42},1.55,{"km":268,"elevM":42},1.83,{"km":270,"elevM":42},2.08,{"km":272,"elevM":42},2.35,{"km":274,"elevM":42},2.6,{"km":276,"elevM":36},2.88,{"km":278,"elevM":42},3.13,{"km":280,"elevM":218},3.38,{"km":282,"elevM":42},3.65,{"km":284,"elevM":115},3.9,{"km":286,"elevM":115},4.18,{"km":288,"elevM":115},4.43,{"km":290,"elevM":115},4.68,{"km":292,"elevM":115},4.95,{"km":294,"elevM":58},5.2,{"km":164,"elevM":58},{"km":297,"elevM":51},5.73,{"km":299,"elevM":51},5.98,{"km":301,"elevM":115},6.25,{"km":303,"elevM":115},6.5,{"km":305,"elevM":115},6.78,{"km":307,"elevM":115},7.03,{"km":309,"elevM":115},7.28,{"km":311,"elevM":115},7.55,{"km":313,"elevM":51},7.8,{"km":315,"elevM":48},8.07,{"km":317,"elevM":260},8.32,{"km":319,"elevM":45},8.6,{"km":321,"elevM":36},8.85,{"km":250,"elevM":42},{"km":324,"elevM":42},9.38,{"km":326,"elevM":42},9.63,{"km":328,"elevM":42},9.9,{"km":330,"elevM":42},10.15,"mdzyH~yfQuG~M_JzNSzAYC@~F|@~CiG~AiA]mAeDf@mChHqE?gArF_H~@{D`CoCtR}\\|HgE~@sAjAdAlBKpEyChRu[cCmRq@id@`AeLbBd@T}IxCuU`@e@So@^uL_@tLRn@bCLvBtAjEXNqFc@iBmAy@m@uDRoCcEiBIkB\\aAZO`E`Cz@mAh@Zs@pHb@RvELx@gBlA`ApDc@dDgFj@rBpHdKhBlJtAle@yAb@gFQol@uDiFiAaAdLb@~]\\dIrBpNiRt[qExCmBJkAeA_ArAcHnDaL`R",{"de":333,"en":334},"Der ABP Newport 10K ist der einzige Lauf des Festivals, der die Stadt nicht verlässt: eine Schleife durch das gesperrte Zentrum und den International Sports Village, zurück am Usk entlang, 31 Höhenmeter auf 10,2 Kilometern. As the opening fixture of the R4W 10K Series it draws quick fields – and it asks you how much you are keeping back for the bridge ramp 1.6 kilometres from the line.",{"de":336,"en":337},"Gestartet wird um 9:45 Uhr, 45 Minuten nach Marathon und Halbmarathon, auf dem Usk Way an der Seite zur Innenstadt. The 10K starts at 09:45, 45 minutes after the marathon and half marathon, on the city-centre side of Usk Way. Like every race of the day it opens with the parade lap of the closed centre: Kingsway, Skinner Street, the Victorian Market at kilometre 0.5, Newport Castle at kilometre 1.0 and back down High Street to the river. That lap is the loudest kilometre of the race and, with the small rise by the castle, its first change of height.\n\nFrom kilometre 2 you head south along Usk Way and cross the river on the City Bridge at kilometre 3.4 – 17 metres, the high point of the course. Corporation Road and Spytty Road bring you into the International Sports Village: Stadium Way at kilometre 4.9, a lap of the Newport Stadium running track, then past the Geraint Thomas National Velodrome and Dragon Park. This section is why the course is surprisingly varied for a 10K – tight turns, sports facilities instead of main roads, repeated changes of surface and direction.\n\nTraston Road, Corporation Road and Spytty Road take you back. At kilometre 7.8 the ramp onto the City Bridge begins: 700 metres, ten metres of climbing, 1.4 per cent. From the crest at kilometre 8.5 it is another 1.6 kilometres along the river, the Transporter Bridge in view, to the finish on Usk Way – on the river and university side of the road, unlike the marathon and half marathon.",{"de":339,"en":340},"Auf einer Zehn-Kilometer-Distanz fällt ins Gewicht, was bei den langen Rennen dieses Tages in der Statistik verschwindet: 82 Prozent der Strecke sind flach, aber 18 Prozent gehen leicht auf oder ab, und beide Brückenüberquerungen liegen an Stellen, an denen du bereits nahe an deinem Maximum läufst. Over ten kilometres, what disappears into the statistics on the day's longer races starts to count: 82 per cent of the course is flat, but 18 per cent tilts gently up or down, and both bridge crossings fall where you are already running close to your ceiling. So the course does not ask for even pace, it asks for even effort – a few seconds per kilometre slower uphill, no braking downhill.\n\nThe first kilometre is the classic trap. Packed roads, a closed city centre, the field fresh and tight – and the course rises slightly towards the castle between kilometres 0.5 and 1.0, which goes unnoticed in the crush. Running goal pace there means running too hard. You take those seconds back easily on the flat of Usk Way between kilometres 2 and 3.\n\nThe race is decided in the last three kilometres. The Sports Village, with its tight turns and changes of direction, costs more than the splits show, and immediately afterwards comes the ramp onto the City Bridge at kilometre 7.8 – 700 metres of gentle climbing, precisely where the hardest phase of a 10K sits anyway. Hold the effort steady, lose no time getting going again at the top, and use the 1.6 flat closing kilometres along the river for the finish. For an age-group runner the race lasts from a little over 30 minutes to around 75; the cut-off is two hours, the minimum age is 15, and pacers run from 40 to 80 minutes. Unlike the day's two long races, this is an effort clearly at and above threshold: a substantial anaerobic contribution, no recovery phases, and a course that additionally breaks your rhythm with tight turns in the Sports Village and a bridge ramp shortly before the end.\n\nPreparation revolves around speed at and above threshold. Intervals of 1,000 to 2,000 metres at goal race pace, classic tempo runs of 20 to 30 minutes, and short fast repetitions for running economy cover the demand. Because the decisive phase falls in the last three kilometres, sessions with a hard finish – a tempo run with fast kilometres tacked on, for instance – fit particularly well.\n\nTwo features of the course belong in training. First, the ramp at kilometre 7.8: regularly add 600 to 800 metres of gentle rise to the end of hard sessions, run at race pace with the heart rate already high, and practise picking the pace back up smoothly at the top – most runners lose more time there than on the climb itself. Second, the turns: the International Sports Village section between kilometres 5 and 6 is made of facility access roads, a lap of the running track and several tight changes of direction. Running bends and direction changes inside quality sessions saves real seconds here.\n\nConditions are kinder than on the long distances, because the course never touches the open Gwent Levels and stays in the more sheltered city. In exchange, a 09:45 start in April is cool: plan a full warm-up with strides and expect a wet road surface through the Sports Village bends. If you are running the 10K as the first of the three R4W 10K Series races, plan it as a full race rather than a fitness test – the front of the field is quick, and course records of 28:35 and 32:55 show what this course is built for.",{"raceName":345,"kind":17,"hasTrack":346,"composedLegs":19,"startDate":20,"leg":19,"legGroup":19,"distanceInMeters":347,"elevationGainInMeters":19,"format":23,"profile":19,"intro":19,"description":19,"pacing":19,"training":19},"ABP Newport Mile",false,1609,[349],{"eventName":6,"eventDate":9,"eventHomepageUrl":11},[351,358,365,372,379,385],{"slug":352,"eventName":353,"proseName":354,"city":355,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":356,"distanceInMeters":21,"elevationGainInMeters":357,"classification":25},"belfast-city-marathon","Phoenix Energy Belfast City Marathon",{"de":353,"en":353},"Belfast","2027-05-02T00:00:00.000Z",259,{"slug":359,"eventName":360,"proseName":361,"city":362,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":363,"distanceInMeters":21,"elevationGainInMeters":364,"classification":25},"brighton-marathon-weekend","Brighton Marathon Weekend",{"de":360,"en":360},"Brighton","2027-04-04T00:00:00.000Z",176,{"slug":366,"eventName":367,"proseName":368,"city":369,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":370,"distanceInMeters":21,"elevationGainInMeters":371,"classification":25},"chester-marathon","MBNA Chester Marathon",{"de":367,"en":367},"Chester","2026-10-11T00:00:00.000Z",221,{"slug":373,"eventName":374,"proseName":375,"city":376,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":377,"distanceInMeters":21,"elevationGainInMeters":378,"classification":25},"london-marathon","TCS London Marathon",{"de":374,"en":374},"London","2027-04-24T00:00:00.000Z",148,{"slug":380,"eventName":381,"proseName":382,"city":383,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":9,"distanceInMeters":21,"elevationGainInMeters":384,"classification":25},"manchester-marathon","adidas Manchester Marathon",{"de":381,"en":381},"Manchester",142,{"slug":386,"eventName":387,"proseName":388,"city":389,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":390,"distanceInMeters":21,"elevationGainInMeters":391,"classification":25},"yorkshire-marathon","Altra Yorkshire Marathon",{"de":387,"en":387},"York","2026-10-18T00:00:00.000Z",160,1789875745869]
