Because the climbing starts almost immediately, there is no settling-in phase. Effort sits at threshold from the gun and stays there; you pace this by an intensity you can hold for six or seven unbroken kilometres, not by kilometre splits.
The race is decided on the long main climb between kilometre 0.35 and kilometre 6.8. The classic trap is the mass start: the field goes out over the first few hundred metres faster than the gradient allows, and that minute is paid back twice over in the final third. The short downhill sections are not a chance to press but the only place to reorganise your breathing and cadence.
The closing ramp at kilometre 7 arrives on tired legs and is short enough to plan for deliberately as the last hard section. The finish is considerably higher and more exposed than the start; in late August, expect noticeably cooler and windier conditions at the top than in the start area.
