NordseeMan & NordseeWoman: Course, Route Profile & Map
The NordseeMan over the middle distance is a coastal race: 1.9 kilometres in the harbour basin of Wilhelmshaven, 90 flat bike kilometres over five laps and a closing half marathon along the North Sea dike. On this sea-level course the resistance comes not from hills but from the wind, and from the length of the day.
No date has been announced for the next edition yet. The course, elevation and route profile above are from the most recent edition.
Course & Elevation
The swim covers 1.9 kilometres in the harbour basin off the Bontekai, in two turn loops of 950 metres each with a rolling start from the DLRG steps. From there wind and evenness set the tone of the day.
The bike course crosses the Jachmannbrücke five times onto the Osttangente, past the naval base to the northern turnaround below the Autobahn. It is almost entirely flat (the bridge supplies practically all the climbing) with good asphalt and no shelter at all from the coastal wind.
The closing half marathon runs four laps along the Jadeallee and the Grodendamm out onto the North Sea dike to the turnaround at the Fischerdorf, also flat and fully exposed to the wind. The NordseeMan is organised by TSR Olympia Wilhelmshaven and stages the TVN state championship over the middle distance.
Pacing Strategy
On a flat sea-level course where no hills set the rhythm, the decision lies in the discipline to ride and run evenly. Come out of the harbour swim under control and lay down a constant power on the bike rather than letting tailwind sections lure you into too high a baseline pace.
The decisive phase is the wind over the five bike laps: because the same route comes five times, every headwind section adds up, and overcooking it in the tailwind is paid back into the wind. The second trap is the long half marathon; meter it across the four laps and start the first kilometres off the bike deliberately controlled, because the unsheltered dike wind exacts a heavy toll over 21 kilometres.
Training plan for NordseeMan & NordseeWoman: 12-week build
For the middle distance in Wilhelmshaven, expect roughly four and a half to six and a half hours of racing depending on your level. The effort is aerobic and even throughout; on the flat course there is no recovery from gradient, so both bike and run demand a sustained, stable output.
Decisive is not any single climb but the ability to hold constant power in the wind for hours and to run the half marathon off the bike without a drop in pace. The unsheltered dike section asks the most of your mental steadiness.
Training therefore centres on long, even bike and run sessions in the aerobic and threshold ranges, complemented by riding and running in the wind to practise pacing against gusts. Brick runs after long rides prepare you for the half marathon on tired legs, and open-water work rehearses the two-loop turn course in the harbour basin.
Because race day is long, a tested fuelling strategy and long training days near race duration also belong in the preparation.
