Oberpfälzer Seenland Triathlon: Course, Route Profile & Map

The sprint distance at the Oberpfälzer Seenland Triathlon is an afternoon race at the Steinberger See: 750 metres on the green swim course, 22 bike kilometres whose entire climbing sits in two ramps at kilometres 9 and 10, and two lakeside run laps, half on asphalt and half on gravel. Two kilometres here decide the rest of the day.

Course & Elevation

The waves go off from 13:25 (men in two blocks first, women and relays at 13:35) with 750 metres on the green swim course in the Steinberger See. Transition sits at the Erlebnisholzkugel in the InMotion Park.

The bike heads straight over the roundabout towards Büchelkühn, on roads closed to traffic from the Hans-Kraus-Allee junction onwards. The first nine kilometres roll almost without gradient, and then the real course arrives: at kilometre 8.95 the climb at Naabeck towards Spielberg begins, 850 metres at 5.4 per cent with a peak of 10.5, and immediately afterwards at kilometre 10 another 880 metres at five per cent. Together those two ramps make up most of the 149 metres of climbing; the way back is a rolling loop via Wiefelsdorf to the lake.

The run is a contrast programme. Two laps lead west out of transition on asphalt, past the feed station, then south along a straight field track beside the Steinberger Straße over the loop's high point, and from the lakeside car park a good 1.1 kilometres back on wide gravel right by the water, part of it in woodland, part open on the shore. The Ski-Club Schwandorf stages the race for the 9th time, in mid-September, with drafting banned on the bike and no-overtaking zones on the approach and finish chute.

Pacing Strategy

The 750 swim metres and the first nine bike kilometres are the part of the race in which everything is most easily ruined. Both are fast, flat and without resistance, which is exactly why they get ridden too hard. Set an output on the flat opening that you will still have on the climb, and remember that drafting is banned here; this section is an individual time trial, not a road race.

The two ramps from kilometre 8.95 decide the race. Barely two kilometres at around five per cent, back to back and with a peak above ten, sit clearly above threshold for most people when taken at race effort. Ride them by perceived effort rather than by position, shift down early and stay seated. The rolling return via Wiefelsdorf hands the metres back without any descent turning technical; it is the recovery you need.

The trap is the change of surface on the run. Two laps mean four transitions between asphalt and wide lakeside gravel, and on gravel the same effort buys a pace a few seconds per kilometre slower. Looking at the watch rather than at your effort out of transition makes you push and pay for it on lap two. Run the first lap to effort and note where the ground is firmer.

Training plan for Oberpfälzer Seenland Triathlon: 12-week build

For the sprint distance at the Steinberger See, expect roughly 1:15 to 1:45 hours depending on your level. The demand splits in two: one long, evenly hard time-trial stretch without any recovery, interrupted by barely two kilometres clearly above threshold, and a run that is flat apart from a few metres of undulation but keeps changing surface.

The two ramps at bike kilometres 9 and 10 and the second run lap decide it. The climb asks for the ability to ride five to seven minutes clearly above your endurance range without falling apart afterwards, and eleven bike kilometres and 5.5 running kilometres still follow, all of them living off that one decision.

The conditions are predictable for mid-September without being neutral. The 13:25 start puts the race in the warmest part of the day, after a long morning of waiting; the bike course is closed from the edge of the village on but open and without cover; and the run is half on gravel, partly wooded and partly exposed on the shore, so footing and sun exposure change several times per lap.

Three priorities follow. First, hill intervals on the bike of four to seven minutes on gradients around five per cent, ridden at race effort and followed by a flat time-trial stretch rather than a rest, so the ramp-plus-return combination becomes familiar. Second, brick runs of ten to fifteen minutes, regularly on gravel and forest paths, since soft ground asks for different foot work and more calf and ankle stability. Third, swim sets such as 6 times 125 metres at race effort plus at least one open-water session with buoy sighting.
