Risstal Triathlon: Course, Route Profile & Map

The Risstal Triathlon in Laupheim is a young and deliberately open sprint race at the Sulmetingen quarry lake: 500 metres in the lake, two laps of a fully closed ten-kilometre circuit through the Riss valley and two run laps around the lake. Not one leg holds a climb; what is asked for is consistency, an aero position and a head for August heat on an unshaded shore.

Course & Elevation

The swim is 500 metres in the Sulmetingen quarry lake, right in front of the Mobi Park, where transition and the finish also sit. The waves go off separately: women at eleven, men at 11:15, relays at 11:30.

The bike lap is a ten-kilometre circuit ridden twice and closed to traffic for the whole race. From the lake it heads west over the railway line up to Obersulmetingen and on to the dead-straight K 7525 out to a turnaround in open fields, the fastest section of the lap. Back through Obersulmetingen the course rolls some 1.7 kilometres downhill to Schemmerberg and then returns to the lake on the narrower, twistier cycle and farm track along the Riss and the railway. The elevation band runs from 501 to 518 metres; two laps gather around 100 barely noticeable metres of climbing.

The run circles the lake twice clockwise, 2.45 kilometres a lap: gravel shore path on the north side, a strip of meadow on the east, farm track in the south back to the Mobi Park. Tight corners exist only at the lake's four corners, but the footing changes constantly. The shore is open and unshaded for long stretches, which on an August day costs more than the course's 18 metres of climbing. The race is staged for the third time by Tri-Events Baden-Württemberg; no licence is required and the field is capped at 400 individual entries plus 50 relays.

Pacing Strategy

500 metres in the quarry lake are short enough to be attacked too hard, and the wave start puts you in a field of similar speeds on top of that. Swim at an effort that keeps your breathing calm and hold a straight line towards the buoy early; over this distance a detour costs more than the saved speed returns.

What decides the race is how you handle the bike lap's two very different halves. The straight section on the K 7525 is open, fast and cornerless: you can hold a constant output in the aero position there, and equally easily ride too hard. The return along the Riss is narrower and twistier and asks for attention rather than watts. Ride to power rather than to speed, come up out of the bars early on the way back and take the corners cleanly instead of rescuing them.

The trap is the second run lap. The footing changes several times per lap between gravel, meadow and farm track, the shore lies unshaded, and around midday in August the sun is full on it. Five kilometres are too short to make up a fluid deficit: drink on the bike already, run the first lap to effort rather than to the watch, and note which shore sections are firmer.

Training plan for Risstal Triathlon: 12-week build

For the Volkstriathlon in Laupheim, expect roughly 1:05 to 1:35 hours depending on your level. The effort sits at or just above threshold throughout: no climb to force a plan, no descent to recover on and, with drafting banned, no group to ride in.

The second bike lap and the handover into the run decide it. On the bike you find out whether your target output stays stable for around forty minutes with not one climb to set the rhythm; after transition, whether the pace you chose carries two laps on changing ground.

The conditions are this course's real resistance. A wave start between eleven and half past on a day in late August puts the bike and run in midday heat, the Riss valley is open farmland without cover, and the path around the quarry lake is largely unshaded. Add the changes of surface on the run: gravel, meadow and farm track ask for different foot work than asphalt. Both can be prepared for: heat adaptation and a drinking plan on one side, running on mixed ground on the other.

Three priorities follow. First, bike sessions with blocks of 3 times eight to ten minutes at intended race effort, ridden alone and in race position, plus cornering practice for the narrow return. Second, brick runs of ten to fifteen minutes at race pace, regularly on gravel and meadow paths rather than asphalt. Third, swim sets such as 5 times 100 metres at race effort plus at least one open-water session with buoy sighting and a wave start.

Frequently asked questions

How long is Risstal Triathlon?

Risstal Triathlon is 25.5 km long. That distance shapes how much aerobic endurance, pace durability, and race-specific work belong in the training plan.

How much elevation gain does Risstal Triathlon have?

Risstal Triathlon has around 118 m of elevation gain over 25.5 km. That affects pacing, muscular load, and preparation for late-race sections.

What is the profile of the bike course at Risstal Triathlon?

The bike course at Risstal Triathlon is classified as Flat, averaging 4.9 vertical metres per kilometre. 65% of the route is flat, 18% climbs moderately (2 to 6%) and 0% is steeper than 6%.

How should I prepare for Risstal Triathlon?

Preparation for Risstal Triathlon should account for 25.5 km, 118 m of elevation gain, current training load, and available training time. An adaptive plan helps place key sessions without ignoring recovery and real life.

What pacing strategy works for Risstal Triathlon?

The pacing strategy for Risstal Triathlon should reflect 25.5 km, 118 m of elevation gain, and your current fitness. Start controlled and keep margin for sections where the profile or fatigue makes target pace harder.
