Uster Triathlon: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The middle distance at the Uster Triathlon is the only distance of the weekend that leaves the shore of the Greifensee: 1.9 kilometres in the lake, a 90 kilometre bike loop newly laid out for 2026 with 1,040 metres of climbing up to 681 metres, and then four laps of the flat lakeside course. The contrast between a hilly bike and a level half marathon defines the whole race.

Course & Elevation

The start is at 7:30 in the Greifensee, from the transition area at the Strandbad Niederuster: 1,900 metres in the lake, the earliest start of the race day and correspondingly in cool morning air.

The bike course is new for 2026 and runs as a single loop of around 88 measured kilometres out of the lake basin. Its backbone comes early: at kilometre 9.1 the longest climb of the course begins, four kilometres averaging 5.3 percent with 211 metres of gain and ramps to 19. A whole chain of further ascents follows: 2.35 kilometres at 3.7 percent at kilometre 23.6, then two ramps back to back at kilometre 30.8 and 31.83 at six and 6.8 percent. In total 1,040 metres of climbing inside a band between 438 and 681 metres, with only 36 percent of the route flat. The final third from kilometre 52 is considerably calmer.

The half marathon is four laps of the shared Greifensee run course, starting and finishing at the Strandbad Niederuster. One lap measures a good 5.2 kilometres, the entire altitude band spans nine metres, and 62 percent of the route is flat. The Uster Triathlon runs for the 37th time in 2026, embedded in a multisport weekend with a SUP race and a lake crossing.

Pacing Strategy

The 1,900 metres in the Greifensee are the calmest part of the day: treat them accordingly. With 1,040 metres of climbing in the hours that follow, a fast swim split buys almost nothing, while going into the red costs you the first big climb.

And that climb is the key point. The four kilometre ascent from bike kilometre 9.1 comes very early, on legs still cold and in the adrenaline of the start. Ramps to 19 percent invite you to take it out of the saddle; on a middle distance that is the most expensive mistake available. Choose a gear you can stay seated in and accept losing time there.

The section between kilometre 23 and 32 decides the race, where three climbs follow in close succession and an opening ridden too hard becomes visible. From kilometre 52 the course calms down; that is the stretch on which you organise yourself for the run, not the one for a final push.

The second trap sits on the half marathon. Four identical, effectively flat laps give you no structure and no relief from the terrain; after 1,040 metres of climbing the first flat kilometres feel deceptively easy. Run the first lap deliberately as your second slowest and govern by effort rather than pace.

Training plan for Uster Triathlon: 12-week build

The Uster middle distance takes roughly 4:45 to 6:45 depending on level. The demand is clearly split in two: at 11.8 vertical metres per kilometre and only 36 percent flat, the bike is a rolling climbing effort with eight ascents, while the half marathon stays physiologically uniform throughout.

The block of climbs between bike kilometre 23 and 32 and the third run lap decide it. One asks for climbing strength after an hour already ridden, the other for fatigue resistance with no help from the terrain at all.

Bike training therefore needs long rides of three to four hours with several climbs of 5 to 20 minutes, deliberately arranged so one comes early and a block sits in the middle of the session, exactly how the race orders them. Check your gearing for ramps of up to 19 percent while you do, and practise riding them seated.

For the run, the long brick of 60 to 90 minutes straight off a hilly ride is the central session, because the difficulty of this half marathon comes purely from what precedes it. Add 4 x 5,200 metres at race pace, because the run is exactly four such laps. On the late-August date: a 7:30 start means cool lake water and cool morning air, while the second half of the bike and the whole run fall into the midday warmth, so the clothing decision in the first transition is made for two very different halves.
