The surface is smooth asphalt throughout, the roads are closed, and the bike finish sits in the middle of town in front of the City Hall.\n\nThe elevation profile is very nearly a straight line: just under 190 metres of climbing across 182 measured kilometres, with almost 100 percent of the route in the flat band and not one ascent that deserves the name. The difficulty comes from the wind instead. The east coast is undeveloped and unsheltered, the trade wind meets you there head-on or from the side at 25 to 30 kilometres an hour, and because that section is ridden three times it accumulates most of the day's work. On the west side the same wind is usually at your back.\n\nCozumel is a flat coral island off the Yucatán coast, and the race is now in its 14th edition on the island's November calendar. Melgar, the waterfront road right on the sea, north to a turnaround near the Cozumel Country Club golf course and back again. That loop of a good 14 kilometres is run three times, and the finish sits on the main plaza in front of the City Hall.\n\nThe profile is as flat as a marathon gets: around 56 metres of climbing over the whole distance, with more than 98 percent of the route carrying no meaningful gradient. There is no climb to change the rhythm, no descent to unload the legs, and no point where the pace drops of its own accord. The course asks for 42 kilometres of near-identical movement.\n\nWhat you get in return is setting and support. The day is not decided on a hill but by how much you spend into the wind on the bike and how much fluid you carry into the run.",{"de":237,"en":238},"Der Renntag beginnt nicht dort, wo er endet. The race day does not end where it begins. The swim and the bike start in the south of the island at Chankanaab Park, while the run and the finish belong to the centre of San Miguel. That means two transitions in two places: bike and bike bag are dropped out at the park the day before, the run bag stays in town, and race morning itself opens with a transfer out of town to the swim start.\n\nThe swim is a single rectangular lap over the reef, entered as a rolling start from the dock. The first few hundred metres run against the current, a long section then runs with it, and the last leg turns back against it to the wooden stairs. The water is warm enough that this is a non-wetsuit swim, and the real difficulty is not speed but sighting above a reef that keeps pulling your attention downwards.\n\nWhat follows is the long, unsheltered part of the day: three laps of the closed ring road and back into town, where T2 sits in the middle of the centre, then the marathon along the waterfront to the finish on the plaza in front of the City Hall. Full disc wheels are not permitted because of the crosswinds, a kit decision that has to be made before you travel. The distribution of effort across this day is clearer than at most long-distance races: the swim costs you little, the bike takes whatever you offer it, and the marathon collects the bill. The most common mistake starts in the water, when the current-assisted middle section feels like peak form and you carry that reading onto the bike. Your time out of the water says very little about your day here.\n\nTreat the transitions as part of the race rather than as lost time. T1 at the park is generous: showering, changing, sun protection and the first bottle belong there, because many hours without a real opportunity follow. T2 in town is small and quick, but it is where you decide whether you head onto the waterfront with a cap, salt and a realistic run plan.\n\nThe day is decided on the last bike lap, not the first. Arrive there with something in reserve and you run a marathon; leave it out in the wind and you walk one. Plan for considerably larger drinking volumes than you are used to in Europe, and in the late hours do not count on ice still being available at every station.",{"de":243,"en":244},"Für Altersklassenathletinnen und -athleten dauert dieser Renntag zwischen zehn und 14 Stunden, bei langsameren Feldern länger. For age-group athletes this race day runs between ten and 14 hours, longer for slower fields. The demand is one very long aerobic block with no structure imposed from outside: there is no climb to slow you down and no descent to let you recover. Rhythm and breaks are things you have to create yourself, through fuelling, through the transitions and through a deliberately chosen intensity.\n\nThe swim deserves its own training because it is raced without a wetsuit. Without that buoyancy your hips and legs sit lower, and a body position that works in neoprene does not automatically work here. Swim your long sessions regularly without a wetsuit, practise sighting in open water with a distracting environment, and get used to constant contact and other people's pace in the crowd of a rolling start.\n\nThe key building block for the second half of the day is long rides whose final hour is the strongest one. That is exactly what the third lap asks for, and it determines which marathon you get. Add one or two full rehearsals over a realistic day length, working through race fuelling, sodium intake and the transition-bag routine rather than using them for the first time on race day.\n\nConditions, not the profile, are the limiting factor at this race.
