After a descent through tight hairpins comes the short, steeper ramp to the Mirador del Río, César Manrique's viewpoint over the strait to La Graciosa, and the return along the coast at Arrieta pulls you out of the saddle once more.\n\nThe rest is the way home, but nothing rolls itself: through San Bartolomé and the vineyards of La Geria and Masdache the course undulates back before the last eight kilometres drop into Puerto del Carmen. The day starts at Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen: 3.8 kilometres in the Atlantic over two laps, with an Australian exit in between that sends you across the sand and back into the water. The sea sits at 19 to 20 degrees in May and the start is a rolling one off the beach. Transition, expo and finish all sit on the Avenida de las Playas, so you keep returning to the same place all day.\n\nThen comes the real test: one bike loop of just over 180 kilometres across half the island, through Yaiza, the lava fields of Timanfaya, Tinajo and Teguise and up to the Mirador del Río in the north, with around 2,500 metres of climbing and a high point just under 590 metres. The road is closed to traffic; the wind is not. Back at transition a three-lap marathon waits on the seafront promenade, one long lap out to Playa Honda and two shorter ones turning in Los Pocillos.\n\nThe contrast is what defines the race: volcanic hinterland without shade on the bike, then a flat, busy waterfront where the closing hours are run in the dark and in front of a crowd.",{"de":339,"en":340},"Das Rennen wird auf dem Rad entschieden, aber nicht dort, wo die meisten es suchen. Wer knapp kalkuliert, baut den Puffer im ersten Streckendrittel auf, weil der Norden ihn zuverlässig wieder auffrisst.","The race is decided on the bike, but not where most people look for it. The first 40 kilometres often run fast and friendly, and the second half through the north collects the bill. Read a tailwind morning as proof of form and you will be recalculating in the crosswind at the Mirador del Río. Plan the ride as a power budget for six to seven hours rather than a reaction to your speed display.\n\nThe transitions matter more here than at most races. You cannot overcook the exit from the swim, because the first longer climbs start right behind town, and after the bike you meet a marathon with no built-in recovery: flat means constant load with no break in your stride.\n\nThe bike cutoffs are structural and end races here every year, as does the 17-hour overall limit. If your margin is thin, build it in the first third of the course, because the north reliably eats it again.",{"de":342,"en":343},"Für Altersklassenathletinnen und -athleten dauert der Tag hier typischerweise zehn bis vierzehn Stunden, deutlich länger als auf flachen Langdistanzen. For an age-group athlete the day here typically lasts ten to fourteen hours, considerably longer than on a flat long distance. The demand is steadily aerobic but constantly interrupted: wind and terrain force small load changes on the bike all day, and those are what most training never covers.\n\nThe key session is the long ride of five to seven hours with the climbing placed late rather than early. Add rides in genuine wind instead of only on calm days, because a crosswind on an open road is a handling and strength problem. Equipment decisions belong in that work too; deep-section wheels are explicitly not recommended on this island.\n\nThe marathon asks for something different: runs straight off long rides, ideally in the heat of the day and with the fuelling you intend to race on. Because the run course is flat there is no natural change in your movement pattern, so the same structures carry the load for hours.\n\nMay conditions belong in the plan from the start: over 25 degrees, almost no shade, salty air and a finish in the dark. Heat acclimatisation, a rehearsed drinking and salt routine and experience with solid food under load are fundamentals here, not fine tuning. Plan at least one rehearsal that strings open-water swimming, a long ride and a short run together: the Australian exit, the transition routes on the Avenida de las Playas and getting dressed after salt water can only be practised as a sequence, not in three separate sessions.",[345],{"eventName":6,"eventDate":9,"eventHomepageUrl":11},[347,355,363,371,378,388],{"slug":348,"eventName":349,"proseName":350,"city":351,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":352,"distanceInMeters":353,"elevationGainInMeters":354,"classification":229},"ironman-barcelona","IRONMAN Calella-Barcelona",{"de":349,"en":349},"Calella","2026-10-04T00:00:00.000Z",226195,890,{"slug":356,"eventName":357,"proseName":358,"city":359,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":360,"distanceInMeters":361,"elevationGainInMeters":362,"classification":32},"challenge-peguera-mallorca","Challenge Peguera-Mallorca",{"de":357,"en":357},"Peguera","2026-10-17T00:00:00.000Z",112997,1441,{"slug":364,"eventName":365,"proseName":366,"city":367,"country":368,"eventType":13,"eventDate":369,"distanceInMeters":329,"elevationGainInMeters":370,"classification":32},"challenge-roth","DATEV Challenge Roth",{"de":365,"en":365},"Roth","Germany","2027-07-04T00:00:00.000Z",1628,{"slug":372,"eventName":373,"proseName":374,"city":375,"country":376,"eventType":13,"eventDate":377,"distanceInMeters":329,"elevationGainInMeters":21,"classification":32},"ironman-italy-emilia-romagna","IRONMAN Italy Emilia-Romagna",{"de":373,"en":373},"Cervia","Italy","2026-09-19T00:00:00.000Z",{"slug":379,"eventName":380,"proseName":381,"city":383,"country":384,"eventType":13,"eventDate":385,"distanceInMeters":386,"elevationGainInMeters":387,"classification":32},"valais-triathlon-festival","Valais Triathlon Festival 2026",{"de":382,"en":382},"Valais Triathlon Festival","Sion","Switzerland","2026-08-15T00:00:00.000Z",225995,1129,{"slug":389,"eventName":390,"proseName":391,"city":392,"country":393,"eventType":13,"eventDate":394,"distanceInMeters":353,"elevationGainInMeters":395,"classification":32},"ironman-karnten-klagenfurt","IRONMAN Kärnten-Klagenfurt",{"de":390,"en":390},"Klagenfurt","Austria","2026-06-14T00:00:00.000Z",2247,1789876365292]
