The gun goes at eight on Piazza del Plebiscito, the great semicircular square in front of the royal palace, with assembly from seven. Via Cesario Console, Via Santa Lucia and Via Chiatamone drop down to the coast at Piazza Vittoria, and from there the course runs the Lungomare Caracciolo right at the water: the car-free promenade with the Castel dell'Ovo behind you and the gulf on your right. After the Rotonda Diaz and a turn at Largo Sermoneta the route goes on by Via Sannazaro and Piazza della Repubblica to a second turn at Via Anton Dohrn.\n\nThen comes the most unusual section: the Galleria della Vittoria, a genuine road tunnel under the Monte Echia hill, which carries the course from the coastal stretch into the port. Via Acton, the Giardini del Molosiglio and the Molo San Vincenzo follow, before Via Cristoforo Colombo, Via Nuova Marina and Via Amerigo Vespucci take the route east past the shipyards and ferry terminals to a turn at the Rotonda Sant'Erasmo. The way back runs through Piazza Bovio, Corso Umberto with a turn at Piazza Nicola Amore, Piazza Municipio and Via San Carlo past the opera house to Piazza Trieste e Trento and back onto the Plebiscito.\n\nThat is a lap of 21.1 kilometres, and the marathon runs it twice; the organizer's own course sheet says so in as many words: 42.195 km in two laps or 21.097 km in one. Measured, it comes to 42.19 kilometres with 228 metres of ascent and 68 percent flat terrain. Two identical laps are a gift for pacing: you know the second half in detail, turns, wind and ramp included. Use that and plan a deliberately negative split, riding the first lap at the easy end of your target and the second on feel.\n\nThe race is decided on the ramp back up to the Plebiscito at the end of each lap. The first time, after 20 kilometres, it is trivial. The second time, after 41 kilometres, it is the last climb of a marathon and it arrives exactly when nothing is left. Run it conservatively on the first pass so that you know on the second what it costs.\n\nThe traps are wind and turns. The Lungomare Caracciolo is completely open to the gulf; in a sea breeze you run it once with and once against the wind on each lap, four times in all, and your splits swing accordingly while your effort does not. On top of that there are five tight turnarounds per lap, each of which has to be accelerated out of. Judge the coastal section by effort, take the turns smoothly rather than braking them, and note the intermediate cutoffs: 3:15 at halfway, 4:25 at 30 km and 5:30 at 38 km.",{"de":158,"en":159},"Für Altersklassenathleten bedeutet die Neapolis Marathon rund dreieinhalb bis sechs Stunden Belastung; das Limit liegt bei sechs Stunden mit Kontrollen bei Kilometer 21,1, 30 und 38. For age-group runners the Neapolis Marathon means roughly three and a half to six hours on the road, against a six-hour limit with checks at 21.1, 30 and 38 km. The demand is largely steady and aerobic, though not entirely uniform: the many turnarounds and the lap ramp force short changes of pace that the flat profile barely shows.\n\nThe first training emphasis is pace tolerance on hard, level ground: long runs to 30-35 km with 10-15 km at marathon race pace at the end, plus threshold runs of 12 to 16 kilometres. On a course without real climbs, threshold performance translates almost directly into finishing time.\n\nThe second emphasis is the two course features. For the turnarounds, put runs with tight 180-degree turns into the plan, loops rather than a track, because getting going again after each turn costs strength and almost never happens in training. For the closing ramp, short 400 to 600 metre rises at four to five percent placed at the end of long runs mean the last kilometre is not a new movement.\n\nOn conditions: mid-October in Naples is mild, the eight o'clock start is still in the shade of the old town, but the second lap on the open Lungomare can already be in full sun. So do not plan even splits to the finish, but a target in which the last kilometre and a half is deliberately slower.\n\nThe coastal section in the first half is what decides it. The Lungomare Caracciolo is wide, flat and fast, and because it comes early it invites a pace you only notice in the port section. Hold goal pace there rather than beating it, and take any following wind without lifting the effort to match.\n\nThe traps are the turns and the tunnel. Four or five tight turnarounds on a half marathon cost more than you would think, because each forces a short restart, so take them wide and smooth. And inside the Galleria della Vittoria GPS drops out for several hundred metres, which leaves the watch reading wrong afterwards: go by the course signs and run the tunnel on feel.",{"de":257,"en":258},"Für die meisten Altersklassenathleten dauert die Half Marathon der Neapolis Marathon zwischen eineinhalb und zweieinhalb Stunden. For most age-group runners the Neapolis half marathon takes between an hour and a half and two and a half hours. The demand is steadily aerobic close to threshold, with a single moment of force at the end: the ramp back up to Piazza del Plebiscito.\n\nThreshold and race-pace work are the backbone: tempo runs of 8 to 14 kilometres and long intervals of 2,000 to 4,000 metres, plus a weekly long run of 90 to 120 minutes. With nineteen of the 21 kilometres flat, the ability to hold one pace for over an hour decides it almost on its own.\n\nTwo stimuli are worth adding for this course. First, climbs at the end: a 500 to 600 metre rise at four to five percent, repeated three or four times at the end of a tempo run, reproduces the closing ramp exactly. Second, turnarounds: practise tight 180-degree turns at race pace, because this course has four or five of them and each one breaks the rhythm.\n\nOn conditions: mid-October in Naples is mild, and the open waterfront offers neither shade nor shelter.
