Only the riverside path is flat; in between come short, very steep pitches up into the old town and onto Bolivar Heights.",{"de":201,"en":202},"Start ist am Eingang zum C&O Canal Towpath in Brunswick, zwischen dem Parkplatz der MARC-Pendlerbahn und dem Potomac. The start is at the entrance to the C&O Canal Towpath in Brunswick, between the MARC commuter-rail lot and the Potomac. The first eleven kilometres or so run almost level on the towpath beside the river. Then everything changes: the course crosses the Potomac, climbs steeply into Harpers Ferry and reaches its high point, a little over 180 m, on the section through Bolivar. The turnaround is on Bolivar Heights.\n\nThe way back passes through Harpers Ferry again, where almost a kilometre of climbing waits around km 24, and crosses both rivers back to the towpath. The last twelve kilometres or so are flat again, along the Potomac back to Brunswick.\n\nThe appeal lies in the history along the route: the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah at Harpers Ferry, the bridges between Maryland and West Virginia, Civil War ground and Brunswick's railroad heritage. 2026 is the first edition, and the organiser still calls the linked course map provisional.",{"de":204,"en":205},"Teile das Rennen in drei Abschnitte: flacher Towpath, hügeliger Mittelteil in West Virginia, flacher Towpath. Wer hier noch gleichmäßig laufen kann, überholt viele.","Split the race into three parts: flat towpath, hilly middle in West Virginia, flat towpath. The temptation is to run the flat opening at the goal pace of a flat marathon, and that is exactly what hurts from Harpers Ferry on.\n\nThe middle section, roughly km 11 to 30, decides the race. The climbs are short, some very steep, and walking the steepest parts is not a failure but often faster and cheaper. Run the descents through the old town under control to save your quads for later.\n\nOn the final flat run back to Brunswick every minute saved on the hills pays off. If you can still run evenly here, you will pass a lot of people.",{"de":207,"en":208},"Für Altersklassenläufer ist mit vier bis sechseinhalb Stunden zu rechnen, wegen der Anstiege eher länger als bei einem flachen Marathon mit gleichem Leistungsniveau. Exzentrisches Krafttraining und gelegentliche Bergabläufe bereiten darauf vor.\n\nMitte November kann es am Morgen im Flusstal kühl sein, plane Kleidung für einen kalten Start.","Age-group runners should expect four to six and a half hours, longer than a flat marathon at the same fitness because of the climbs. The effort is long and aerobic, with a block of short, hard efforts in the middle.\n\nSo train long runs that start flat and turn hilly in the middle, and add short, steep hill repeats. Practise walking steep ramps on purpose and getting back into a run afterwards.\n\nDownhill training matters: the descents through Harpers Ferry load the quads, and twelve flat kilometres still follow. Eccentric strength work and occasional downhill runs prepare you for that.\n\nIn mid-November the river valley can be cool in the morning; plan clothing for a cold start.",{"raceName":210,"kind":17,"hasTrack":211,"composedLegs":19,"startDate":20,"leg":19,"legGroup":19,"distanceInMeters":212,"elevationGainInMeters":19,"format":23,"profile":19,"intro":19,"description":19,"pacing":19,"training":19},"Half Marathon",false,21097,{"raceName":214,"kind":17,"hasTrack":211,"composedLegs":19,"startDate":20,"leg":19,"legGroup":19,"distanceInMeters":215,"elevationGainInMeters":19,"format":23,"profile":19,"intro":19,"description":19,"pacing":19,"training":19},"Veterans Challenge 5K",5000,[217],{"eventName":6,"eventDate":9,"eventHomepageUrl":11},[219,226,234,241,248,255],{"slug":220,"eventName":221,"proseName":222,"city":223,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":224,"distanceInMeters":21,"elevationGainInMeters":225,"classification":25},"baltimore-running-festival","Baltimore Running Festival",{"de":221,"en":221},"Baltimore","2026-10-17T00:00:00.000Z",348,{"slug":227,"eventName":228,"proseName":229,"city":230,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":231,"distanceInMeters":21,"elevationGainInMeters":232,"classification":233},"harrisburg-marathon","YMCA Harrisburg Marathon",{"de":228,"en":228},"Harrisburg","2026-11-08T00:00:00.000Z",210,"FLAT",{"slug":235,"eventName":236,"proseName":237,"city":238,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":239,"distanceInMeters":21,"elevationGainInMeters":240,"classification":233},"marine-corps-marathon","Marine Corps Marathon",{"de":236,"en":236},"Arlington","2026-10-25T00:00:00.000Z",209,{"slug":242,"eventName":243,"proseName":244,"city":245,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":246,"distanceInMeters":21,"elevationGainInMeters":247,"classification":233},"new-york-city-marathon","TCS New York City Marathon",{"de":243,"en":243},"New York","2026-11-01T00:00:00.000Z",251,{"slug":249,"eventName":250,"proseName":251,"city":252,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":253,"distanceInMeters":21,"elevationGainInMeters":254,"classification":233},"philadelphia-marathon","TIAA Philadelphia Marathon",{"de":250,"en":250},"Philadelphia","2026-11-22T00:00:00.000Z",212,{"slug":256,"eventName":257,"proseName":258,"city":259,"country":8,"eventType":13,"eventDate":9,"distanceInMeters":21,"elevationGainInMeters":260,"classification":233},"richmond-marathon","Allianz Richmond Marathon",{"de":257,"en":257},"Richmond",214,1791431433290]
