The 50K is the longest distance at the Valkyrie Trail Race, a women-focused trail event in Cheyenne Mountain State Park near Colorado Springs. The course brings you back past the start four times before it finishes there, so your preparation has to be built around the final loop, not the first.",{"de":212,"en":213},"Los geht es am Trailhead kurz hinter dem Besucherzentrum, zunächst durch offene Wiesen auf glattem Kalksplitt, bevor gewundener Singletrail in die höheren Lagen des Parks hinaufführt. The start sits at the trailhead just past the visitor centre, heading first through open meadows on smooth crushed limestone before winding singletrack climbs towards the park's higher ground. You begin a little above 1,800 metres, the top of the course is just under 2,100, and the whole day stays inside that band.\n\nThe route is assembled from two loops that both return to the start. The big one climbs for just over three kilometres from km 3, then gives the height back across about seven. The small one is more compact: nearly three kilometres up, a little over four down. The running order is big, small, big, small, small.\n\nThat puts the weight of the race late. The second big lap brings the steepest average section around km 26, and the two closing small loops begin their climbs at km 34 and km 41. Those two ascents alone supply almost a third of the roughly 1,200 metres of climbing, and they arrive with well over 30 km already in your legs.",{"de":215,"en":216},"Teile das Rennen nach Schleifen ein, nicht nach Kilometern. The first big lap feels easiest, and that is exactly where excess speed costs the most, because four more long climbs follow the one from km 3. Treat its ramps of up to 13 percent the way you could still treat them after 40 km.\n\nThe day is settled from km 34. The same loop twice in a row, each with almost three kilometres of climbing, rewards steady work uphill and gives nothing back for reserves you only hoped you had. Anyone still running at the top can use the descents; everyone else loses time in both directions.\n\nThe biggest trap stands at the start itself. Around km 41 you pass right by the finish and have to head out again, so decide in advance how you will handle that moment. Altitude adds to it: the same pace costs more here than at sea level, so race by effort and leave the watch alone.",{"de":218,"en":219},"Rechne mit sechs bis neun Stunden Belastung. This is mainly a long aerobic effort, but it never settles: under a tenth of the course is flat, and you are constantly switching between climbing and running downhill. If you will be hiking, practise strong power hiking as a discipline of its own.\n\nThe yardstick is the final two climbs. Arrange your long runs so the vertical sits in the last third, and finish them with two ascents of around three kilometres at roughly six percent. Back-to-back efforts like these reproduce the end of the race better than any evenly hilly long run.\n\nYou cover more ground downhill than up, and most of it is runnable, which means a long load on the quads. Practise quick descending on tired legs, on winding singletrack where you can, and place it deliberately at the end of your biggest days.\n\nThe 8 May date puts your longest runs in March and April. If you do not live at altitude, remember the entire race happens between 1,800 and 2,100 metres, and arrive a few days early if you can. The race leaves from just past the visitor centre at the trailhead, on smooth crushed limestone through open meadows, before winding singletrack starts to climb. From a start a little above 1,800 metres the course reaches almost to the 2,100-metre mark, on a women-focused event whose six distances all share this ground.\n\nEach of the two rounds repeats the same sequence. Two short rises after the first kilometre lead into the longest climb, which begins at km 3 and takes you to the high point. About seven kilometres of falling trail then bring you back to the low point near the start. From there you climb once more for nearly three kilometres and drop down again by a shorter way.\n\nOn the second round the long climb arrives at km 23.5 and the last one at km 34.6. Knowing every ascent already helps and hurts in equal measure: you know exactly what remains. Around 1,000 metres of climbing split evenly across both halves, so this course has no brutal finish, only a tired one.",{"de":383,"en":384},"Das Ziel für die erste Hälfte ist einfach zu formulieren: Sie muss sich zu leicht anfühlen. The goal for the first half is easy to state: it should feel too easy. Coming back past the start still looking fresh is worth more than any split, because the second round has the same climbing and no relief at all. Aim for even rounds, and treat any lead built in the first as borrowed.\n\nThe race is decided between km 23.5 and the high point. This is the longest climb for the second time, with ramps above twelve percent, and 15 km still lie beyond it. Take the speed out yourself before the hill does it for you.\n\nThe trap comes earlier. Those seven kilometres of falling trail on the first round run easily, and pressing them costs you twice: in the quads and on the climb at km 13.9. Stay below what you could do there. At this altitude your margin is smaller than your sea-level times suggest anyway.",{"de":386,"en":387},"Für den Trailmarathon solltest du grob fünf bis siebeneinhalb Stunden einplanen. The effort stays aerobic, but the rhythm of long climbs and long falling stretches has nothing in common with an even road marathon. If you come from the road, the main lesson is how four long ascents feel in sequence.\n\nThe design of the course hands you the key session: run a hilly home loop twice in a row and try to finish the second no slower than the first. Build this over the weeks until one loop takes about two hours. That trains exactly what race day asks for, repeating a known effort on tired legs.\n\nStrength for the long climb comes from hill intervals of ten to twenty minutes at around six percent, with short passages well above that. Add downhill running, because nearly half of the course falls, much of it on long and very runnable stretches. Practise it regularly so your quads can carry the second round at all.\n\nWith a race on 8 May, the long sessions land in March and April. From the trailhead behind the visitor centre the course crosses open meadows on crushed limestone to the winding singletrack that works up through the higher ground of Cheyenne Mountain State Park. Two small rises warm you up, then the longest climb of the day begins at km 3. It tops out just below 2,100 metres, the highest you will go.\n\nThe next seven kilometres or so run mostly downhill until you are close to the start again. From here the second part of the race is two identical loops: from km 13.7 almost three kilometres up at an average six percent, a short way back down, and from km 20.6 the same thing once more.\n\nThat double loop is what separates the 30K from the half marathon, which stops after the first of them. It carries about 350 of the nearly 700 metres of climbing, half the total, and it asks you to run past the finish instead of stopping there. The plan follows from the course's arithmetic: the first big climb is longer, but the two after it are harder together. So take the hill from km 3 under control and do not let the seven kilometres after it tempt you into a pace you will pay for on the loops. At km 13.7 more than half of the climbing is still ahead of you.\n\nThe decisive stretch is the second pass from km 20.6. Both loops are the same, so you get a direct comparison. Run the first so the second does not slow down, then bring it home downhill. The steeper drop of the small loop rewards whoever can still run cleanly.\n\nThe trap is that moment at the start. You arrive with downhill momentum, see the finish and have to turn uphill straight away. Settle your rhythm there, take the first rise gently and do not expect quick legs, because at more than 1,800 metres recovery comes more slowly.",{"de":523,"en":524},"Rechne mit dreieinhalb bis fünfeinhalb Stunden. That is longer than the distance suggests to a road runner, and it turns the race into a steady aerobic task divided by three climbs of about three kilometres each. Short hard spikes appear on ramps up to twelve percent, but endurance remains the deciding quality.\n\nThe key session recreates the end of the race: after a longer hilly run, do two matching climbs of around 15 minutes back to back, with downhill running in between. Start with a single repeat and build until the second is no slower than the first.\n\nA simple habit prepares you for passing the start. Run your long sessions past the car or your front door and add another lap instead of stopping there. This women-focused trail day starts just past the visitor centre: smooth crushed limestone runs through open meadows, then singletrack takes over and winds upward. You are already a little above 1,800 metres at the start, which you barely notice on the opening level ground and definitely notice on the first climb.\n\nTwo short rises before km 3 introduce the longest piece of the day, just over three kilometres up to just under 2,100 metres. Beyond it the course falls for about seven kilometres, never very steep and with small counter-climbs, back close to the start. This is where you think the worst is done.\n\nAt km 13.7 the second climb appears, almost as big as the first. Nearly three kilometres at around six percent take you back above 2,000 metres. Only a little over four kilometres then remain, dropping noticeably steeper than the long descent before, until you are back at start height where you began.",{"de":645,"en":646},"Hier verteilst du die Kraft auf zwei Berge, nicht auf 21 gleiche Kilometer. You are spreading your strength across two hills here, not 21 equal kilometres. The first comes early and feels manageable; the second is only slightly shorter and catches you with two thirds of the race in your legs. So plan the first climb below your comfort limit, even if ramps above twelve percent would slow you anyway.\n\nKm 13.7 decides the race. There is plenty of time to be made on the long descent before it, but run that flat out and you reach the foot of the second climb with nothing spare. Take those seven kilometres easily and look for your time in the three kilometres uphill, where the gaps in the field really open.\n\nThe trap is your opening pace. The level limestone at the start runs fast, and it comes exactly when you are freshest. At this altitude a quick first kilometre takes its revenge late, so let the meadows go by calmly and keep something for the steeper final drop.",{"de":648,"en":649},"Die meisten Läuferinnen und Läufer sind zweieinhalb bis vier Stunden unterwegs. Most runners will be out for two and a half to four hours, well over what a road half takes, while it remains a brisk endurance run with two long phases of strength work. The character alternates between steady climbing and relaxed rolling downhill, with short spikes only on the steepest ramps.\n\nThe most important ability is running a second hill as strongly as the first. Your standard session is a hilly run with two climbs of 15 to 20 minutes, the second coming after an hour of running. Hold a rhythm you can carry through ramps above ten percent, by hiking briskly if that is what it takes.\n\nAdd hill intervals of five to eight minutes once a week, along with regular quick downhill running. The long descent is gentle and the last stretch to the finish is steeper, and both want practice on tired legs so you can still run at the end and not merely arrive.\n\nGet used to narrow, twisting paths as well, because pace cannot be held as evenly on winding singletrack as on crushed limestone. For just over three kilometres it rises at around six percent, sharply steeper in places, to just under 2,100 metres, the same high point the long distances reach. This single ascent carries about 60 percent of the day's 300-odd metres of climbing.\n\nFrom the top the work is done: about seven kilometres fall with small waves back towards the start, and no further hill waits for you. The finish is where you set off, a little above 1,800 metres, at the point where those on the longer distances still have to keep going.",{"de":760,"en":761},"Das Rennen teilt sich in zwei Hälften mit gegensätzlichen Aufgaben. Until the top of the loop around km 6 you are rationing; after that you get to run. Reach the top still able to breathe and you have about seven kilometres of descent where time comes more easily than anywhere else. Reach it fighting and those first minutes downhill go on recovery alone.\n\nThe trap is the rush of reaching the high point. At almost 2,100 metres, after a hard climb, you lack the air for a fast pace straight away, and the small waves in the descent come as a surprise. Run the first two minutes down deliberately easily, then build your speed and hold it to the finish.",{"de":763,"en":764},"Plane je nach Leistungsstand eineinhalb bis zweieinhalb Stunden ein. Kommst du aus niedrigeren Regionen, nimm den Anstieg auf bis zu 2.100 Metern etwas vorsichtiger, als deine Trainingsdaten es vorschlagen.","Depending on your level, plan on one and a half to two and a half hours. This is a hard sustained run with a long strong middle: about 20 to 35 minutes uphill, depending how much you hike, then a sustained effort downhill. Unlike the half marathon, there is no second climb to save for, so you can go to your limit earlier.\n\nThe central session is a hill interval as long as the climb itself: 20 to 30 minutes of steady uphill, once a week in the specific phase. Shorter repeats of five to eight minutes containing brief steep stretches prepare you for the ramps above twelve percent.\n\nThe transition straight afterwards counts as well. Build sessions where you shift from climbing rhythm into running downhill without a break and hold the pace for seven to ten minutes. Its rolling circuit stays below the park's higher ground in Cheyenne Mountain State Park, which makes it a good first step from road to trail, though the altitude is still very much there.",{"de":873,"en":874},"Die Runde beginnt wie alle Distanzen dieses auf Frauen ausgerichteten Rennens am Trailhead hinter dem Besucherzentrum und führt auf glattem Kalksplitt durch offene Wiesen. Das Ziel liegt wieder am Ausgangspunkt.","Like every distance at this women-focused race, the circuit starts at the trailhead behind the visitor centre and heads through open meadows on smooth crushed limestone. This opening section runs well, and you have a few hundred metres to find your place before the path dips slightly and then begins to rise.\n\nFrom just before the first kilometre the course climbs for about 800 metres, followed at km 2 by a second, shorter rise. Most of the 100-odd metres of ascent sit in those two, and on the winding singletrack the gradient touches ten percent at its peaks. The circuit reaches its high point about halfway round, a little above 1,900 metres.\n\nFrom there it rolls back towards the start in small waves. Where the longer courses turn off for the long climb, you peel away and finish the circuit on the way down. Close to half the course rises and close to half falls, and only a small part of either is steep. Wenn du von niedrig gelegenen Strecken anreist, setze dein Zieltempo vorsichtiger an und nutze die letzten zwei Kilometer bergab für deinen Schlussspurt.","Over about six kilometres there is no easy section that would justify holding back, and no reason to empty yourself on the meadows either. Run the limestone briskly without getting out of breath, because after just one kilometre comes the part that sets up your race.\n\nBoth rises sit between km 1 and km 2.5, and this is where the circuit is decided. On the singletrack hold a rhythm that takes the brief ten-percent spikes with shorter steps, not with force. You are only halfway when you reach the top, but the hard part is behind you, and from there the course nearly always falls.\n\nThe trap is the altitude. A sprint across the meadows at more than 1,800 metres feels normal at first, and the bill arrives with a delay on the first rise. If you are coming from low ground, set your target pace more carefully and use the last two kilometres of downhill for your closing push.",{"de":879,"en":880},"Rechne mit 40 bis 70 Minuten. For that length of effort you run around your aerobic threshold, with two short stretches above it. As a newcomer to trail you do not need the long hill sessions of the longer distances, but you do need regular running on uneven ground and a feel for shifting gradients.\n\nThe two rises are short enough for a clear recipe: hill repeats of two to four minutes on a moderate slope, six to eight of them, jogging down to recover. Once a week is enough, and towards the end include short pieces around ten percent so the spikes do not surprise you on race day.\n\nAdd a tempo run of 20 to 30 minutes, on rolling ground where possible. It prepares you for what the course asks after the high point: a sustained brisk roll over small waves where you never quite settle. Pick it up a little towards the end, which matches how the circuit closes.\n\nPractise running on narrow, twisting paths too if you are coming from the road.
