Güstrow Cross Duathlon – Das Härteste im Norden: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

Das Härteste im Norden does not carry that name for marketing reasons: 5 kilometres of off-road running, 27 kilometres of mountain biking over four laps and then the same 5 running kilometres again add up to 726 metres of climbing in a landscape that looks flat on a map. The Güstrow Cross Duathlon is held in mid-October on forest and field tracks near Mühl Rosin.

Course & Elevation

The race starts at 10 am at the primary school in Mühl Rosin, south of Güstrow. The opening run covers a 5 kilometre off-road loop the organiser calls selective, and it is: only 22 per cent of it is level, a climb arrives after just 130 metres and a second one of 630 metres at 5.1 per cent from kilometre 2.7 takes the loop to its high point, after which it drops away sharply over the last kilometre and a half.

The bike leg is the heart of it: four laps of the 6.9 kilometre off-road circuit, classified as hilly at 21.6 metres of climbing per kilometre. Twice per lap it kicks up steeply: 400 metres averaging 8.9 per cent with peaks of 13.7, and shortly afterwards 550 metres at 8.8 per cent touching 13.4. Ten per cent of the course sits in the steep uphill band and another 6.5 per cent in the steep downhill band, with only a fifth of it level. The elevation band runs from 56 to around 109 metres, which means these eight ramps are not long but short and brutal. A mountain bike is explicitly recommended.

To close, the same 5 kilometre loop comes round a second time, now with 27 off-road kilometres in your legs. The field is capped at 100 places, this 34th edition is staged by Tri Fun Güstrow, and the long distance counts as a scoring round of the BIKE Market Cup 2026.

Pacing Strategy

The opening run is a positioning exercise, not a race. Because the loop starts climbing after 130 metres and is only a fifth level, going out too fast is punished twice: you burn matches on the hills and you enter a bike course that turns steep immediately with an already high heart rate.

The race is decided between the third and the fourth bike lap. The two ramps of nearly nine per cent come round eight times, and their character changes with fatigue: what can be ridden seated in the middle ring on lap one demands technique and traction on lap four, because the rear wheel spins on loose ground the moment you stand up. Ride the first two laps deliberately with one gear more in reserve than you need.

The main trap is the closing run, specifically its profile. The loop climbs to kilometre 3.5 and then drops steeply. After 27 off-road kilometres that final descent invites a pace your pre-loaded legs and trunk can no longer control cleanly on unmade ground. Keep your cadence high and your stride short on the way down. Then there is the season: in mid-October, forest and field tracks in Mecklenburg are frequently wet and covered in leaves, which lengthens braking distances and further degrades traction on the ramps.

Training plan for Güstrow Cross Duathlon – Das Härteste im Norden: 12-week build

The long cross duathlon takes an age-group athlete roughly two and three quarter to three and a half hours. The demand is anything but even: eight short, steep ramps on the bike with technical descents between them, and a hilly off-road running loop before and after.

Two things decide it. First, the repeatability of short supra-threshold climbs; each of the eight ramps means one to two minutes well above threshold, and the recovery between them is a descent, not a rest. Second, the ability to still run downhill off-road on completely pre-loaded muscles.

The training emphasis therefore belongs on off-road sessions with 8 to 10 efforts of 60 to 120 seconds on a climb of 8 to 12 per cent, ridden on loose ground and deliberately seated to rehearse traction. Add technical descending work: with 6.5 per cent of every lap in the steep downhill band, handling confidence buys more time than extra watts.

For the run, what counts is downhill off-road running under fatigue (4 to 6 times 400 to 600 metres downhill on forest track after a hard ride) plus at least one full run-bike-run rehearsal every two to three weeks. And because the race falls in mid-October with the possibility of wet leaves, tyre choice, pressure and sessions in cool, damp weather belong in the preparation.
