Course & Elevation

The start goes at 10 am on a rectangular course in the Geesthacht harbour basin on the Elbe. Start, transition and finish all sit on the Menzer-Werft-Platz, the former shipyard square right on the river.

The bike course is a ten-kilometre out-and-back: out of transition along Werftstraße and Am Hafen onto the Elbuferstraße, out towards Grünhof and back. Four laps make the 40 kilometres. The profile stays between 6 and 17 metres above sea level and is 58 per cent flat; the only registered climb is a 300 metre ramp at 4.5 per cent, which comes once per lap and is therefore ridden four times. At 6.2 metres of climbing per kilometre this is a fast course whose resistance, out on the open riverbank, comes from the wind instead.

The run is four anti-clockwise laps of the 2.4 kilometre circuit beside the Elbe, just under 59 per cent level and without a single climb in the profile. The race is part of the PALM SERIE; an individual entry requires a racing licence or a day licence, and cut-offs apply at 50 minutes for the swim and three hours for swim and bike together.

Pacing Strategy

A harbour basin swims differently from a lake: a rectangular course means four clearly defined corners where the field bunches. Swim the 1,500 metres with a little space off the inside line and keep calm at the corners rather than surging at each one.

The race is decided on the third bike lap. On a course with a single small ramp per lap nothing structures the race except your own head, and it is on lap three that concentration slips: position softens, cadence drops, speed goes. Set a target output for the headwind stretch and check your aero position deliberately on every lap.

The main trap is the four bike turnarounds and the four run laps. Across 40 kilometres you brake to almost nothing seven times and have to rebuild seven times; over-cooking each rebuild burns more than the turns themselves cost. And because the run passes the finish eight times, the change of rhythm is the psychologically hardest part of the race: run the first lap a shade slower than planned and save the fastest for last. In late August on a shadeless riverside promenade, the warmth of late morning comes on top.

The real requirement is therefore not strength but consistency over time: 60 to 75 minutes in the aero position on a flat riverside road, interrupted only by four turnarounds. Riders who mostly train on rolling ground have never met this kind of load, because there the terrain keeps interrupting the position for them.

The training emphasis is accordingly long threshold blocks of 2 to 3 times 20 minutes in race position on flat roads, ridden deliberately in wind as well, each with a re-acceleration from low speed standing in for the turnarounds. Add neck and trunk work, because over 40 flat kilometres it is usually posture rather than leg strength that limits you.

For the run, what counts is speed endurance on level ground and brick runs of 20 to 30 minutes straight off those bike blocks. Practise lap runs at an unchanging kilometre split as well, so that four identical laps do not turn into a fading pace. In the water, open-water sessions with a rectangular course and tight turns are worth the time, plus a start without a sprint; the harbour will not sort the field out for you.
