Hallwilerseelauf: Course, Route Profile & Map

The Hallwilerseelauf half marathon is a lap of the lake with a run-up: from the centre of Beinwil am See the course drops about seventy metres to the shore and then stays at lake level for eighteen kilometres. The 2026 edition hosts the Swiss championship over this distance, and the course is fast enough to deserve it.

Course & Elevation

The start is at 520 metres in the village centre of Beinwil am See, a good seventy metres above the water. The first three kilometres give that height back down to the Hallwilersee, and after that the elevation barely moves again: the course stays between 449 and 461 metres and follows the shore all the way around the lake.

That splits the race into two very unequal parts. Once the descent is over, more than half of what remains is flat, and the rest is swells of a few metres, the kind a lakeside path picks up between reed beds, trees and small rises. There is no climb worth the name anywhere on the lap.

The route runs through the Aargau Seetal, past the moated castle of Hallwyl and along tree-lined shore paths, sections at the edge of vineyards and quiet spots right at the water. The finish is at the lido in Beinwil am See. The Hallwilerseelauf has been run since 1975, was already the largest event of its kind in Switzerland by 1977 and passed 5,000 participants for the first time in 2006. It belongs to the AZ Goldläufe series and is affiliated with Swiss Athletics.

Pacing Strategy

The descent out of the village is free time and at the same time the biggest trap of the day. Seventy metres of drop across three kilometres will easily put you well under goal pace off a 12:15 start with fresh legs. Take it with a high cadence rather than long braking steps, protect your quadriceps, and let the splits be fast as long as the effort stays low.

From kilometre three the real task begins: eighteen kilometres on a course that never gives you a break. On ground this flat there is no terrain to pull you back from a pace that is too ambitious, so run it on feel and heart rate rather than on the splits the descent handed you.

The race is decided in the final six kilometres between Schloss Hallwyl and Beinwil. If you did not wreck your legs on the descent you can hold an even effort through there; if you did, that is exactly where you lose it. Expect wind over the water on the open shore sections and run in a group if you can, because shelter is worth more on a flat lap than any surge.

Training plan for Hallwilerseelauf: 12-week build

For a committed age-group runner the race lasts roughly ninety minutes to two hours. The character is one long, even effort near threshold: no gradient forces you out of pace, but you hold a narrow window for nearly the whole distance, which is more demanding on a flat course than it looks.

The emphasis therefore belongs on threshold work in long blocks: twenty to forty minutes at target half marathon pace, supported by long runs with a fast final third. That reproduces the situation of the closing six kilometres, when the course offers no change of rhythm at all.

One course-specific session is missing from most plans: controlled downhill running. The opening three kilometres give away seventy metres, and eccentric loading of that size typically announces itself in a half marathon only after kilometre fifteen. Build a few long runs with clear descending sections at race pace.

Mid-October in the Seetal is cool and damp. Mist often sits on the Hallwilersee in the morning, the shore paths are slippery and leaf-covered after a wet night, and the air stays clammy all day. The 12:15 start does catch the warmest hour, but test your clothing and shoe choice for a soft, wet surface rather than for dry asphalt.
