The Brienzerseelauf half marathon does not begin at the start line but on a boat: the MS Brienz carries you up the lake to Brienz, and from there you run the southern shore back to Bönigen. Anyone expecting a flat lakeside race is in for a surprise, because the ramp up to the Giessbach waits barely three kilometres in.

Course & Elevation

The race starts at 11:00 at the Cholplatz in Brienz, at lake level. The first three kilometres stay by the water, and then the hard part of the day begins: 1.7 kilometres averaging nine percent, with pitches above seventeen, lift you from 566 to a good 716 metres. Up there the road runs as a balcony between 690 and 715 metres above the water until, from kilometre nine, a long descent drops it back to the shore at Iseltwald.

At kilometre ten, by the Iseltwald lido, the two-person relays change over. For solo runners the second climb starts immediately: roughly one and a half kilometres at a good six percent for about a hundred metres of height. After that the course falls back to lake level, runs flat for a while, and around kilometre sixteen at the Forsthaus Bönigen it rises one last time by some forty metres. The closing four kilometres tilt gently downhill into the finish at Bönigen.

The Brienzerseelauf has been organised by TV Bönigen since 1957 and is run for the seventieth time in 2026. The route follows the shore road between forest, rock walls and open views over the turquoise Brienzersee, with the Giessbach falls as its landmark at half height. Because construction work on the A8 motorway on the opposite shore has withheld permission for the full lake circuit for two years, this half marathon from Brienz is currently the weekend's main race.

Pacing Strategy

The first three kilometres along the shore are the only genuinely neutral part of this race, and that is exactly what makes them dangerous. After the boat trip and a long wait in Brienz the pace there feels cheap. Run the opening deliberately below goal pace, because whatever you gain will cost you twice on the Giessbach ramp.

The climb from kilometre 2.7 is run on effort, not on the watch. With pitches at seventeen percent, walking is the faster option for many runners compared with an attack that wrecks the legs for the remaining eighteen kilometres. The race is not decided there, though, but on the second climb out of Iseltwald: a hundred metres of height straight after a long descent, with ten kilometres already in the legs.

The real trap is in the descents. Between kilometres nine and ten you give back about a hundred and fifty metres, and between twelve and fourteen almost another hundred. Charging down them with long braking strides is paid for on the flat final third, where there is no gradient left to hide behind. Take the descents with a high cadence and save your quadriceps for the last five kilometres into Bönigen.

The key training content is climbing at race duration rather than hill sprints. Repetitions of five to ten minutes at six to nine percent reproduce both ramps, the short steep one at the Giessbach and the longer, steadier one out of Iseltwald. Put at least one of those sessions at the end of a long run on a regular basis, because the decisive second climb only arrives after ten kilometres.

Downhill running matters just as much, controlled and at a high cadence. Around two hundred and fifty of the roughly three hundred and forty metres of climbing are given back in two long descents, and eccentric loading of that size reliably announces itself in the flat final third. Rehearse the transition from a steep descent straight into a climb as well, because that is exactly what the course asks for at Iseltwald.

In mid-October the course sits between 566 and 716 metres, much of it in shaded forest on the southern shore. It is cool and often damp, and the shore road can be wet and covered in leaves. Add the shape of race day: the boat leaves Interlaken Ost at 09:07 and the gun goes at 11:00. That is almost two hours outdoors before the start. Plan throwaway layers and a warm-up that works in cold, cramped conditions at the Cholplatz.
