Course & Elevation

A lap is 4,255 m by the operator's own figure, 4,213 m as we measured the OSM geometry. Twelve corners, six left and six right, and 30 m of vertical range. Past the start straight comes the Bridgestone chicane, then the track falls away to the Nockstein hairpin at the far end of the ring, which is the low point of the lap. From the hairpin the back straight climbs steadily for a good kilometre, about 28 m at roughly 2.8 percent, to the high point just inside the paddock corner. The rest of the lap is descent: down the long paddock corner, through the Reiner S and back onto the straight. Three laps means the same pattern three times over, and with an 08:00 start you get cool air and low sun. On a standard road bike your position on the machine matters more here than your equipment does.

Pacing Strategy

The course has exactly one problem and it repeats: the climb on the back straight arrives at the same place every lap and is long enough that starting too hard charges you for it three times. Ride lap one about 10 W under what feels right and let the power meter make the call rather than fresh legs. Add 15 to 25 W on the climb, but only as far as the crest. The descent through the paddock corner is not a rest section: that is precisely where most riders lose time by stopping pedalling. The last half lap from the Reiner S is the window for whatever is left.

Training plan for RAD am Salzburgring: 12-week build

Expect 17 to 23 minutes flat out, so an effort just above threshold. Prepare with intervals of that same length and shape: 2 x 10 or 3 x 8 minutes at threshold with a deliberate 60 to 90 second surge in the middle of each, because that is what the climb will ask of you. Do at least two of those sessions in your time trial position rather than on the tops. And practise pedalling downhill at high cadence, because a standard road bike carries less speed through that descent than a TT bike does.
