Course & Elevation

The Velodom 120 is the long distance of Rund um Köln, Cologne's classic road race: a good 120 kilometres and around 1,500 metres of climbing on a big loop from the start at the Rheinauhafen out into the Bergisches Land and back to a finish in the city. The amateur granfondo shares the day with a professional race, which gives the event its scale and atmosphere.

The profile is pure Bergisches Land: long straights broken up by short, sharp climbs. The first 25 kilometres roll flat out of the city before the work begins. The first real climb comes at kilometre 26, 1.3 kilometres at just over 6 percent. The hardest section follows at kilometre 39, 1.2 kilometres averaging 8 percent with ramps up to 16 percent, and at kilometre 45 the road tilts up again for almost 100 metres of gain. The short rises keep coming until around kilometre 96, including the famous cobbled passage up to Schloss Bensberg, before the final 20-plus kilometres run mostly flat back into Cologne.

Eight counted climbs sit packed into the middle of the race. None of them is long, but their accumulation is the point. Riders who treat the Bergisches Land as a formality tend to find the return leg to Cologne much longer than the map suggests.

Pacing Strategy

The Velodom 120 falls clearly into three parts: around 20 flat kilometres out of Cologne, a hilly middle in the Bergisches Land, and a flat run back to the finish in the city. Its 1,460 metres of vertical sit almost entirely in the middle, in short climbs with pitches above 16 per cent, the sharpest being the ramp at kilometre 39. It is right here, in the short, hard climbs between kilometre 39 and 49, that whether you stay in your group is decided.

On the flat approach it pays to save energy and ride sheltered rather than take the wind in the big field. On the short ramps a decisive kick matters to hold the wheel.

The flat finish rewards groups: lose contact in the Bergisches Land and it gets expensive alone in the wind. The trap is burning yourself on the fast approach.

Training plan for Rund um Köln - Velodom: 12-week build

Plan for roughly 3:30 to 5:30 hours of riding on the Velodom 120, depending on your level. The demand is that of a classic rolling road race: long aerobic stretches in the bunch, interrupted by short, intense efforts on the climbs. You need both a stable endurance base for four-plus hours and the ability to ride one to five minutes well above threshold, repeatedly, without paying for it afterwards.

The decisive zone is the middle section between kilometres 26 and 96. The sequence of the steep climb at kilometre 39 and the follow-up climb at kilometre 45 is where groups split, and losing contact there means riding the remaining 70 kilometres in the wind instead of in the draft. The cobbled rise to Schloss Bensberg adds its own demand: steady pressure on the pedals with a relaxed upper body.

Translate that into training with long rides of three to five hours that place climbing repeats in the second half, so the short ramps still work on tired legs. Add focused intervals of two to five minutes above threshold with short recoveries to replicate the dense rhythm of the Bergisches Land rollers. Practise group riding and closing small gaps quickly after crests, because on the long straights the draft decides your energy bill. Finally, rehearse a complete four-hour fuelling plan; the flat closing stretch after kilometre 96 rewards everyone who still has something left to spend on the run back into Cologne.

Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
