The K110 Masters of Innsbruck is the flagship of the adidas Innsbruck Alpine Trailrun Festival: 112.6 kilometres and 5,500 metres of climbing on one huge high-alpine loop around Innsbruck, starting and finishing at the Landestheater in the city centre. The route follows the 2023 Trail Running World Championships course, passing the Kalkkögel range and crossing the Patscherkofel.

The profile shows its hand early. Three climbs stack up in the first ten kilometres, including a ramp from kilometre 8 that averages nearly 28 percent. The longest climb begins at kilometre 22: almost six kilometres gaining 780 metres in one block. The second half offers no amnesty, with three more major climbs between kilometres 55 and 66 adding over 1,000 metres of gain between them, and a final steep counter-climb still waiting at kilometre 97.

Close to half of the entire distance runs on steep ground, up or down, and only one kilometre in ten is flat. The trails alternate between flowing and technically demanding high-alpine terrain, with constant views across the Tyrolean mountains. The race is explicitly aimed at experienced ultrarunners with prior technical alpine experience, and it sits inside a four-day festival with a large expo and an unusually urban, dense race atmosphere for a mountain ultra.

Pacing Strategy

Split the day into three parts. The opening eight kilometres already stack three short, partly very steep ramps (up to 51% at kilometre 8); you won't lose the race here, but you can overload it early with too much ambition. The real test is the category-1 climb from kilometre 22: 5.95 kilometres at an average of 13%. Take it at a pace you could still hike after 80 kilometres, and switch to power-hiking early.

Because almost half the course runs steeply up or down, the flat sections don't decide it; how sparingly you run the ramps and how controlled you descend the equally steep downhills does. The cluster of three climbs between kilometre 55 and 66 arrives when your legs are empty, and that's where it's settled.

The classic trap is early pace on the first ramps that only bites in the final quarter. Eat and drink consistently from the start.

Intensity stays low and almost purely aerobic throughout; the outcome is decided by fatigue resistance, fuelling, and how efficiently you can still hike and run steep ground after 80 kilometres.

The critical sections are well defined. The near-28-percent ramp at kilometre 8 forces an early hike and punishes anyone who started like it was a marathon. The 780-metre climb from kilometre 22 is the first honest test. But the race is decided in the block between kilometres 55 and 66, three major climbs on deeply fatigued legs followed by long technical descents. Runners who can still descend with control there gain hours, not minutes.

Training has to match that: high volume with a large vertical share, long mountain runs collecting 1,500 to 2,500 metres of gain, back-to-back weekend sessions, and deliberate practice of fast uphill hiking, because with nearly a quarter of the course in steep ascent you will hike a substantial part of this race. Eccentric strength work is equally important, since close to 4,900 metres of descent will wreck unprepared quads long before the finish. Run technical trails regularly, including in a fatigued state. Add night runs with your headlamp, a fuelling strategy of 60 to 90 grams of carbohydrate per hour rehearsed in long sessions, and a complete gear test under race-like conditions before the start.
