The 2 km is the fun run of the Brimbank Park Running Festival, the one distance where children, parents and grandparents can all line up together. It puts real park ground under your feet without a single sustained climb, and it brings you back to the start within minutes.
The lap starts and finishes at the same point and never strays more than about 500 metres from it. The ground falls gently until just before the first kilometre, then climbs back in small waves before the last stretch returns to the start. Only around ten metres separate the lowest point from the highest. A good part of the route is run in both directions, so you keep seeing other starters along the way.
Brimbank Park is a local community park in Keilor East, north-west of the city, with open spaces and wooded trails by the river. The festival presents itself as a trail run any generation can join, stretching from this short lap up to 50 km. In 2025 it drew 274 competitors and raised donations for Canteen.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
The trick of this course sits at its halfway point. The first 800 metres tilt gently downhill and feel easier than they are. The stretch after them, up to about kilometre 1.6, hands that height back, and that is where children who sprinted off the line slow down.
So run the opening section deliberately easy, at a pace where you can still talk. If you want a fast time, save the effort for the rolling way back and the short finish.
On the constant small waves, shorten your stride uphill and simply let it roll downhill. With children, plan walking breaks on the rises from the start rather than taking them out of exhaustion.

Expect roughly 10 to 20 minutes depending on age and speed. It is a short but real effort, and because the ground keeps shifting slightly, you never settle into the even rhythm of a track or pavement.
For children and beginners, two short sessions a week in the run-up to 21 March are enough: alternate running and walking until the two kilometres work in one go. So the course holds no surprises, do at least one of those on park paths instead of tarmac, since the ground asks for more attention on every step.
Add a few short rises as well, an embankment or a gentle hill in your local park, and practise not stopping at the top but jogging on.
That is what the section after kilometre 0.8 asks for. If you are chasing a quick time, add six to eight 20-second pickups once a week.
