business2run VARENA: Course, Route Profile & Map

The business2run VARENA is a corporate 5.3 kilometre run that starts on the VARENA parking deck and finishes two floors above it. In between lies a single lap through Vöcklabruck with around 33 metres of climbing: one long, barely noticeable rise into the fields to the south and an equally long way back down to the Vöckla.

Course & Elevation

The course is a single lap. From the VARENA parking deck it runs over the roundabout onto Untere Agergasse and on to Gmundner Straße, then east along Vöcklabrucker Straße towards Oberweg. A field track with a closing right-hand bend leads onto Lindenstraße, which takes you back to Vöcklabrucker Straße and towards Untere Agergasse. From there a gravel and forest path drops down to the Vöckla, a short stretch follows the river and passes under the B1 to a turnaround back towards the car park.

The profile is unremarkable but not flat. From a start at around 420 metres the course rises steadily from about kilometre one and reaches its high point of just under 438 metres on the field track between Oberweg and Lindenstraße at kilometre 2.8. All of that height is given back by kilometre 4.2, and the remainder runs level beside the river. Around 45 percent of the route is flat in the strict sense, while a good nine percent rises at more than three percent.

The surface changes repeatedly: asphalt on the streets, gravel on the field track and along the Vöckla bank. The whole course is secured by police and marshals. At the end, two floors inside the multi-storey car park separate you from the finish on the upper deck, where the race traditionally turns into a Weißwurst party.

Pacing Strategy

The lap has two halves that feel like opposites. The first two and a half kilometres climb almost continuously but gently, and the rest falls back into the valley. Run the first half on feel and you will run it too fast, because the rise is too shallow to register as a climb at all.

The race is decided between kilometre one and kilometre 2.8, on the last stretch of Vöcklabrucker Straße and the field track that follows. Those are the only sections steeper than three percent, and that is where a deliberately restrained pace pays for itself.

The trap is at the start. The launch off the parking deck and the flat opening kilometres through town tempt you, in a team classification, into a pace the field track will not let you hold. Make your move only from the turn onto Lindenstraße, once the course tips downhill, and let the final flat kilometres beside the Vöckla decide your time.

Training plan for business2run VARENA: 12-week build

For 5.3 kilometres, expect an effort of roughly 22 to 45 minutes depending on your level. That is short enough to keep the intensity high throughout: at its core this is an effort at or just below threshold, with no recovery phases and no climb long enough to structure the pace for you.

The race is decided on the long, shallow rise between kilometre one and kilometre 2.8 up to the high point on the field track. It costs little height but a lot of speed, because it arrives exactly when the opening sharpness fades. The second demand is the repeated change of surface at high speed, from asphalt to gravel and back.

In training, threshold work carries the most. Tempo runs of 15 to 25 minutes at a pace you can just hold evenly match the demand better than short, hard intervals. Add longer intervals of three to five minutes slightly above that.

Two details are worth the effort on this specific course. Run some sessions on gently rising open ground to practise holding effort steady when your pace drops for no visible reason. And run regularly on gravel and forest paths so the surface changes cost you no rhythm on race day. Because every team member runs the full distance and the individual times are added up, what counts in the end is your own evenly paced run.
