Dolomiti Extreme Trail.

At 102 kilometres the DXT 103K is the longest course of the Dolomiti Extreme Trail in the Val di Zoldo, one of the longer distances carrying UTMB and ITRA qualification. No single mountain settles this loop; what counts is how much you still have for the last two big climbs after kilometre 75.

Dolomiti Extreme Trail 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The loop gets to work early. The first long climb starts at km 3 with almost 490 metres of gain. Just past km 8 comes a harder one, nearly three kilometres at around 20 percent on average. Between km 26 and 46 the course then tightens into the hardest block of the day. Four climbs follow one another closely, among them the wall at km 34, which gains 438 metres in less than two kilometres.

After that the big ramps stay away for almost 30 kilometres, but there is no real rest: around a third of the total ascent sits in shorter counter-climbs between the long ones. At km 75 the longest climb of the second half stands in the way, 547 metres in one go. Eight kilometres later comes the last big one with 341 metres. You share both with the 72K. The remaining 15 kilometres or so lead back down to where you started.

The 103K opens a programme with the 72K on 11 June that runs through the Val di Zoldo for three days and only ends with the short courses on 13 June. So this is the first and longest chapter of those days: a mountain loop that asks for around 5,500 metres up and as many back down.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Dolomiti Extreme Trail 2027.

Start

Start under control

The first twelve kilometres already bring more than 1,000 metres of climbing, with the field still fresh and packed. Take both climbs as if they were the fifth of the day: at 20 percent nearly everyone hikes anyway, and running here wins minutes that you repay later in hours.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The block between km 26 and 46 is the section you survive rather than win. What matters is leaving it with a working stomach, because from there on comes the ground you can still run. That is also the trap: after so much steep work the rolling stretch from km 46 feels easy, and taking it too fast leaves you empty at km 75 with the next big climb in front of you.

Finish

Spend what is left

That is where the race is decided. If you can still climb the last two ascents evenly, you will pass many who were ahead of you. Keep something for the way home as well: by then your quads have absorbed thousands of metres of descent, and the final drop only runs if they were not spent earlier.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Dolomiti Extreme Trail 2027: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

Depending on your form, expect roughly 16 to 26 hours, which is longer than a June day stays light. The effort stays almost entirely aerobic but is no steady run: long spells of steep hiking alternate with descending that loads the muscles far more than the lungs.

Core

Train race pace

The key stimulus is steep hiking under load. Find the steepest ramp near you and practise on gradients around 20 percent, working out how long you can hold a brisk walk without your heart rate running away. If you race with poles, that technique belongs in every hill session, since race day is too late to learn it.

Specific

Rehearse the course

The last 30 kilometres matter just as much. Build your longest sessions so most of the climbing falls in their second half, and keep running downhill on tired legs. Several consecutive days of long mountain runs prepare you for the climbs after km 75 better than one giant outing. With the start on 11 June, that block falls in April and May.

Race week

Arrive fresh

Practise eating and drinking while climbing slowly, not just at flat running pace, because this decides whether your stomach carries the second half. At least one long session should also go into the dark with a headtorch, so the night in the race is not your first on a trail.
