Donautal Half Marathon Untermühl: Course, Route Profile & Map
The Donautal Half Marathon runs from the boathouse at Untermühl along a paved path beside the Danube towards Obermühl and back, through one of the narrowest and quietest stretches of the upper Danube valley. The course is flat and AIMS-measured, so the challenge is pure pace-holding over 21 kilometres on Austria's national holiday in late October.
Course & Elevation
Start and finish are at the boathouse of the Plöcking volunteer fire brigade in Untermühl, which has changing rooms and showers. After a short section through the hamlet and across the mouth of the Große Mühl, the field joins the paved path on the left bank of the Danube and follows the river upstream towards Obermühl. There it turns, and the way back is the same path in the other direction to Untermühl.
The profile is as flat as a riverbank gets: the path runs beside the dammed Danube almost at water level, with no real climbs, only small undulations at the bridge and through the village. Five aid stations are spread along the course, with another in the finish area. Because it is an out-and-back, the leaders pass you coming the other way while you are still heading out, so you always know where you stand in the race.
The race is organised by the Plöcking fire brigade, and the proceeds go towards its equipment. 2026 is the 27th edition of the half marathon, held together with the Volkslauf and a hiking day. The field is small and regional; a little over 230 runners finished in 2025. It goes ahead in any weather, and the narrow valley with wooded slopes on both sides frames the whole course.
Pacing Strategy
On a flat out-and-back there is no terrain to set your pace, so you have to. Run the first kilometres deliberately at goal pace, even if that feels too slow after the start at the boathouse and over the Mühl bridge. Every kilometre is the same, and whatever you bank early you pay back twice on the way home.
The race-deciding section is the return after the turn. The riverside path is long and uniform, with little to fix on except the river, and by then the field is strung out. Holding your cadence here without anyone beside you is where places are won. Use the aid stations as markers and think from one to the next.
The trap is the turnaround itself. The tight change of direction costs momentum, and many runners surge afterwards to win back the lost seconds. Run out of it calmly and settle back into pace within two or three minutes. In October on an open river, also expect a headwind on one of the two halves and spread your effort accordingly rather than overcooking the tailwind half.
Training plan for Donautal Half Marathon Untermühl: 12-week build
For most recreational runners the Donautal Half Marathon takes between about one and a half and two and a half hours. It is a steady aerobic effort without climbs; the difficulty lies in consistency, not in individual spikes.
What decides it is holding pace on the second half of a monotonous riverside path. Train long runs with a faster final third, and half-marathon-pace blocks of 20 to 40 minutes on flat, straight paths, ideally as an out-and-back yourself. That teaches you to run a pace that neither terrain nor other runners set for you.
The turnaround is a small but real pace killer. Add a few tight turns to your tempo runs and practise getting back up to speed without a surge. With five aid stations on the course you need to carry nothing, but practise drinking from cups on the move.
The race is held on a late-October morning in the narrow Danube valley and goes ahead in any weather. Do your key autumn sessions in cold, wet and windy conditions too, and test clothing that keeps you warm until the start without overheating in the race. The 10 a.m. start means an early drive down the hairpins to Untermühl for many runners, so plan breakfast and warm-up around it.
