Uniper Düsseldorf Marathon: Course, Route Profile & Map
The Uniper Duesseldorf Marathon is a pure city course along the Rhine: it starts on Joseph-Beuys-Ufer and finishes on the Untere Rheinwerft in the middle of the old town. More than 90 per cent of the route is level and the only meaningful gradients are the two Rhine bridges. Anyone looking for a fast time will find a course that gives it.
Course & Elevation
The gun goes at 09:45 on Joseph-Beuys-Ufer, right on the Rhine promenade. The opening section runs north along the river towards the trade fair grounds and the Nordpark, with the first aid station by the Aquazoo at around five kilometres. The course then turns south back into the city centre and crosses the Oberkasseler Bruecke to the left bank at roughly kilometre 13.
In Oberkassel it loops through the district, and the half marathon mark falls there. It then returns over the Rhine and heads straight onto the Koenigsallee, Duesseldorf's grand boulevard, and on through the green Zoopark. The closing section runs into the Medienhafen with its modern architecture, then over the Koenigsallee once more before turning onto the final kilometres towards the old town. The finish is on the Untere Rheinwerft, directly on the river in the heart of the city.
The profile is effectively a straight line: 73 metres of climbing over 42.195 kilometres, level on balance, more than 91 per cent of the route flat and not a single steep passage. What little vertical there is comes almost entirely from the two river crossings. What defines this marathon is therefore not the topography but the city: the organiser animates the route with music under the Run to the Beat banner, and some 300,000 spectators lined the streets at the most recent edition, which drew over 23,000 entries across all distances and set a participation record.
Pacing Strategy
On a course that is more than 90 per cent level, nothing corrects an over-quick start for you. That is precisely the difficulty of a fast city marathon: it feels too easy for the first fifteen kilometres. Set your kilometre split before the gun and hold it rather than following the feeling along the Rhine promenade.
The two river crossings are the only gradients on the route. They are too short to decide a race but long enough to break the rhythm, and the second arrives after the half marathon mark, once the field has sorted itself out. Run both at constant effort rather than constant pace and get back into rhythm promptly afterwards.
The race is decided between kilometres 30 and 38, through the Zoopark, the Medienhafen and the second Koenigsallee loop. Here the course twists through the city with many corners and changes of direction, which costs more on tired legs than the same distance in a straight line. Anyone who has stayed even to that point can use the crowds; anyone who started too fast loses most time exactly there. The 09:45 start in mid-April usually falls in comfortable conditions, though between city blocks on a sunny day it can get warmer than the air temperature suggests.
Training plan for Uniper Düsseldorf Marathon: 12-week build
For an age-group runner the effort lasts roughly three to five hours. In character it is a steady aerobic run without the intensity spikes a hilly course forces on you: more than 91 per cent of the route is level, there is no gradient where strength decides and no descent that gives anything back.
The main training consequence follows: race-pace durability rather than hill strength. Long runs with extended blocks at target pace, ideally over 25 to 32 kilometres, are worth more on this course than any hill session. Because the route runs almost entirely on hard city asphalt, those sessions should be on asphalt too rather than exclusively on soft ground.
The decisive phase is the twisting city section between kilometres 30 and 38. Many changes of direction and tight corners on tired legs demand trunk stability and the ability to re-find rhythm immediately after each one. Practise that with long runs on convoluted urban loops instead of long straight routes, and add stability work for the trunk and hips.
Conditions are the final piece. A mid-April marathon means most of the build fell in winter and the race can land on one of the first warm days of the year with no heat adaptation behind you. A few sessions in morning sun, a rehearsed drinking and carbohydrate plan for four hours and a realistic strategy for a warm race day therefore belong in the preparation.
