Eroica Montalcino: Course, Elevation & Route Profile
The Percorso lungo eroico is the queen route of Eroica Montalcino: 151 kilometres on the white gravel of the Val d'Orcia, the Crete Senesi and the Val d'Arbia, ridden on a period road bike. It is a long day out, with more than 3,000 metres of climbing spread almost entirely over short, hard ramps.
Course & Elevation
The loop starts and finishes in Montalcino, perched at around 560 metres above the valley, so the day opens with a long descent and touches its lowest point at 118 metres. From there the course works through the hills in waves: 2.5 kilometres at 5.3 percent from kilometre 16.4, then 3.2 kilometres at 5.8 percent from kilometre 31.3, both already largely on gravel.
The route is decided in its final third. From kilometre 105.4 the road rises for 3.5 kilometres at 6.5 percent, some 227 metres in one go, and only a few kilometres later a 1.8 kilometre ramp at 8 percent follows at kilometre 109.2. The terrain never settles after that: two more climbs at kilometre 139.6 and kilometre 144.9 stand in the way before the final rise back onto the hill town of Montalcino.
The surface is the real opponent. The white roads of the Crete Senesi run unsheltered across the clay hills, the late May sun is already high, and the going alternates between packed gravel, loose stones and deep ruts. Seven feed stops serve Tuscan food rather than gels, and the finish is a medieval town centre rather than a finishing straight.
Pacing Strategy
Plan the day backwards. The first hundred kilometres are never flat but they are manageable; the course collects its bill on the two climbs at kilometre 105 and 109, which together cost close to 400 metres of altitude on loose ground. Ride every short ramp before that with whichever group passes and you will arrive there already over your limit.
On the white roads consistency beats bursts of power. A period bike with down tube shifters forces you to choose a gear early anyway, and standing on the pedals in loose gravel simply costs traction. Stay seated, keep the effort even and use the descents to recover rather than to attack, because the gravel descents here are fast and rough at the same time.
The classic trap is heat. There is almost no shade between the vineyards, and the feed stops are generously Tuscan but far apart. Drink from the first ristoro onwards and eat earlier than feels necessary; if you wait until the climb at kilometre 105 to take food on board, your plan is already gone.
Training plan for Eroica Montalcino: 12-week build
Expect seven to ten hours of riding, more if you use the ristori properly. The demand is endurance with constant changes of load: only a sixth of the course is flat, a good third points uphill, and most climbs last one to four minutes. This is not a steady time trial, it is a long chain of repetitions.
The race is decided on the climbs from kilometre 105, because they arrive on tired legs and on loose gravel. Train climbing after four or five hours in the saddle rather than fresh in the morning, and ride those efforts seated at a low cadence, the way a vintage drivetrain forces you to.
Conditions belong in the plan. Late May in Tuscany can go past 30 degrees, the course is largely unsheltered, and the gravel is dry and dusty. A few deliberate rides in the midday heat and a rehearsed drinking and eating routine matter as much here as any interval session.
Then there is the equipment. Riding 151 kilometres of gravel on narrow tyres with down tube shifters and rim brakes asks for handling skill on a loose surface, confident hands on fast descents, and a trunk that tolerates ten hours in an old riding position. Long rides on unsealed roads on exactly the bike you will race is the best preparation there is.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
