Flensburg liebt dich Marathon: Course, Route Profile & Map

The VR Bank Nord Marathon combines four laps with a distinctly maritime city setting: from central Flensburg the course heads to Marina Sonwik, follows the Förde and returns to the finish on Südermarkt. Its largely flat layout rewards even endurance and disciplined pacing more than climbing power over the full distance.

Course & Elevation

Each lap starts in the pedestrian centre by Flensburg Galerie and runs past the bus station to the harbour basin. After crossing the harbour tip, it reaches the eastern side of the Förde and heads north on mostly flat roads. The turn is on the Sonwik promenade between Volkspark and the Baltic Sea. With 62.3 percent flat terrain and 265 metres of ascent matched by 265 metres of descent, the course stays rhythmic for long stretches, while its small rises accumulate across four laps.

The return takes in the harbour and its historic ships, the Nordertor and the narrow Oluf-Samson-Gang. The route then threads through the old town and pedestrian zone to Südermarkt. Water, harbour and dense city streets give this marathon its identity. The finish is in the centre of town, not on an anonymous edge, and the final lap brings you back through the same public spaces with spectators close by.

It is one lap repeated four times. That makes the landmarks easy to learn, but it also makes every small rise familiar by the late stages.

Pacing Strategy

Divide the marathon into four even sections, not a fast opening followed by damage control. The 62.3 percent flat share invites a steady rhythm, while the distributed rises and descents require only short adjustments. Run the small undulations by effort rather than forcing an exact pace over each one.

The decisive section is not one particular hill but the fourth lap from Sonwik back to Südermarkt. By then you have already covered the Förde passage and the old town three times. Keep a deliberate reserve early and use the flatter harbour sections later to restore a controlled rhythm.

The trap is surging at the harbour tip and near the finish on the first laps. The crowd and the short rises make that feel easy, but the accumulated cost of four laps is what decides the marathon.

Training plan for Flensburg liebt dich Marathon: 12-week build

Most age-group athletes should expect roughly three and a half to five hours of work. The course is primarily a long aerobic effort with repeated small changes of pace. Its 265 metres of ascent are spread around the lap rather than concentrated in one climb, so training should centre on duration and rhythm.

Use long runs on flat or gently rolling roads and divide them into four sections. Occasionally place the final 10 to 12 kilometres at controlled marathon effort. Short rises of 30 to 90 seconds are enough to reproduce the frequent change between flat running and small drags.

The race-deciding phase comes on the last lap, especially from Sonwik through the harbour to Südermarkt. Practise holding form after several hours while negotiating city corners and changes of direction. Include paved urban paths in preparation. In September, exposed sections by the Förde can feel cool and windy, so rehearse clothing choices for changing conditions.
