Foulée Verte de Clamart.

La Découverte is the shortest adult course at the Foulée Verte de Clamart: five kilometres of trail through the forests of Clamart and Meudon. It spares you the chain of climbs on the longer distances, but the early descent is paid back on one proper hill, and that hill is worth preparing for.

Foulée Verte de Clamart 2027: Course, Route Profile & Map

The loop starts gently. The first 800 metres are nearly level, then the course drops about 60 metres over a little more than a kilometre. Just before the two-kilometre mark you reach the low point, and from there the only direction is up, at first so gradually that your breathing notices before your legs do.

At kilometre three that drift turns into the hill of this course: 650 metres at a little over six percent on average, briefly touching double figures. That single stretch delivers more than half of the total climbing. After it the work is done, because the last kilometre and a half stays at start level and only undulates slightly to the finish.

The organiser describes its trails as open to everyone and the event as pure nature, and this loop fits that best: you are out in the forest with only one climb to manage. The course follows last year's route and may be modified for 2027, so the kilometre marks can still shift a little.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Foulée Verte de Clamart.

Start

Start under control

Over five kilometres the instinct is to run flat out from the gun. Hold back anyway: the level opening and the descent hand you speed that costs nothing as long as you take it easily. Stay relaxed enough at the bottom to speak in full sentences.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

La Découverte is decided between kilometre two and the end of the climb a little past three and a half. The long, gentle stretch before the climb is where you keep running evenly instead of pressing, so that you reach the foot of the hill with air left. On the hill itself, short steps and steady pressure count, and for a newcomer a brisk walk on the steepest part is no defeat.

Finish

Spend what is left

The trap sits at the top. Finish the climb at your limit and your legs take a long time to start running again on the gently undulating closing stretch, where you lose more than you did on the hill. Crest it with something in reserve and only accelerate once your breathing has settled.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Foulée Verte de Clamart: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

Recreational runners will be out for roughly 30 to 45 minutes. That is a high but manageable sustained effort with exactly one spike: the few minutes on the climb, when you run above your comfortable pace and then have to find your stride again.

Core

Train race pace

That can be trained directly. Hill repeats of four to six minutes on a similar gradient, followed by a few minutes of brisk running on the level, reproduce the decisive phase: not only the climb but the restart after it. Once a week is enough if you come from road running, and three or four repeats suit this distance.

Specific

Rehearse the course

The second focus is the ground underfoot. The Foulée Verte is a forest race, so move some of your spring running from tarmac to forest paths. It works on foot placement, gets you used to changing ground and gives you an honest sense of what pace is possible away from the road.

Race week

Arrive fresh

Also practise controlled downhill running on short slopes. The descent after the first kilometre is only moderately steep but it comes early, and running it loosely with short steps saves your thighs for the hill at kilometre three. Rehearse the sequence once at race length in the weeks before 23 May.
