Gran Fondo Tratturo Magno: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The Gran Fondo Tratturo Magno starts in mid-March in Rosciano above the Pescara valley and follows roads of the Alto Pescarese once used by shepherds on the Tratturo Magno, the great transhumance route between L'Aquila and Foggia. The long loop covers 104 km: hill country with no single pass but a lot of climbing.

Course & Elevation

The loop ranges from just under 50 m in the valley to a little over 600 m on the ridges. The first real ramp comes after about 20 km: just over 1.5 km at around 5 %. Then comes a block of climbs between km 43 and 70, including 2.5 km at almost 7 % and the longest climb of the day from km 58, a little over 5 km at around 5–6 %.

The final third is calmer, but around km 86 and again just before the finish after 100 km there are two more climbs of about 2 km at just over 5 %. The loop finishes back in Rosciano.

The organiser states 1,857 m of ascent; our profile of the organiser's file measures about 1,720 m.

Pacing Strategy

The first 40 km are where the second half gets ruined: groups ride fast in the valley, but the real block only comes between km 43 and 70. Ride the short ramps there below threshold rather than sprinting out of the saddle to hold a wheel.

The 5 km climb from km 58 wants a steady tempo. Anyone with reserves left can use the two late climbs; the last one arrives just before the finish.

Training plan for Gran Fondo Tratturo Magno: 12-week build

The demand is around four hours of aerobic endurance with repeated climbs of 1.5 to 5 km at 5–7 %.

Build long rides on hilly terrain through the winter and add 10–20 minute threshold intervals that match the length of the longer climbs.

A mid-March date is early in the season: if you ride little outdoors in winter, collect volume and climbing in good time on the trainer or somewhere warmer.

March mornings in Abruzzo can be cool. Plan clothing for changing temperatures and test your fuelling on long sessions.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
