the hella hamburg halbmarathon: Course, Route Profile & Map
The hella hamburg halbmarathon runs point to point straight across the city: it starts on the Reeperbahn, finishes at the exhibition halls, and takes in Altona, the Elbe waterfront and a full circuit of the Außenalster on the way. With around 60 metres of ascent across 21.1 km it is a personal-best course, and preparing for it means sharpening pace, not climbing.
Course & Elevation
The first three kilometres are the only sustained climb of the day. From the Reeperbahn the course heads west along Königstraße and Max-Brauer-Allee, gaining some fifteen metres up into Ottensen, where it winds through Lobuschstraße, Arnoldstraße, Keplerstraße, Fischers Allee, Bernadottestraße and Holländische Reihe. It then runs out along Palmaille and drops sharply to the Elbe at kilometre five.
From there it follows the waterfront for five kilometres: Fischmarkt, Hafenstraße, Landungsbrücken, Vorsetzen, Baumwall, Kajen and Bei den Mühren at the edge of the Speicherstadt. Around kilometre ten the route passes through the Wallringtunnel and then crosses the Lombardsbrücke and Kennedybrücke to reach the Außenalster.
The Alster is what gives this race its character. From kilometre eleven to kilometre twenty the course circles the open water: north along the eastern shore on An der Alster, Schwanenwik and Schöne Aussicht, across at Krugkoppel, then back down the western side on Harvestehuder Weg and Alsterufer. Nine kilometres without a gradient, without shelter and without a real change of direction. Only on Gorch-Fock-Wall and St. Petersburger Straße does the road rise again, a good ten metres, before the finish at the exhibition halls, barely a kilometre and a half from the start.
Pacing Strategy
More than 82 per cent of the course is flat, and the profile has exactly three events: the climb into Ottensen between kilometre one and three, the drop to the Elbe at kilometre five, and the ramp to the finish from kilometre twenty. In between lie fourteen kilometres on which nothing regulates your pace for you. Running a personal best here is not a matter of splitting the race into sections but of holding one number.
The classic trap sits right at the start. Straight out of the wave start on the Reeperbahn the road goes up, and fifteen metres of ascent in two kilometres cost more at goal race pace than they look on paper. The second trap is the Alster: nine uniform kilometres of shoreline with no shelter are where this race is lost, not through a collapse but through a slow slide of a few seconds per kilometre.
The last event is the rise to the exhibition grounds. It is short, but it arrives with twenty kilometres in the legs, and a small reserve carried through the flat middle section pays off exactly there.
Training plan for the hella hamburg halbmarathon: 12-week build
For an age-group runner the half marathon takes roughly 1:15 to 2:30 depending on level; the time limit is 3:30. The demand is a steady aerobic effort close to threshold: the course has no climbs that force you to shift down and no descents that let you recover, so the race is run in a single intensity window from start to finish.
The decisive stretch is the Alster section between kilometre eleven and twenty, where pace comes from endurance and concentration alone. In training that means long tempo runs at goal race pace (two times five kilometres with a short jog recovery, or a progressive long run of 15 to 18 kilometres), plus threshold intervals of 1,000 to 2,000 metres.
Conditions belong in the plan. The 2026 edition was moved from June to 25 October after a heatwave, and in late October the course runs for long stretches along open water on the Elbe and the Alster with no shelter at all. Clothing, a warm-up that bridges the wait in the start wave, and a plan for nine Alster kilometres with the wind coming from every direction in turn should all be settled beforehand.
The surface is asphalt throughout and the roads are closed to traffic, so this is a race for flat, fast shoes, so put a few sessions in them into the final weeks. For the finish it helps to end long runs with a fast final kilometre and a short rise; that is exactly the order in which the climb to the exhibition grounds arrives on race day.
