IRONMAN Italy Emilia-Romagna: Course, Route Profile & Map

IRONMAN Italy Emilia-Romagna is the IRONMAN series' only full-distance race in Italy, and it starts early in the shallow Adriatic off Cervia's town beach. Between the rolling start on the sand and the arch at the Fantini Club lie two bike loops over the salt pans into the hills and a marathon of four town laps. You prepare not for climbing, but for a load that never eases all day.

Course & Elevation

The day opens with a rolling start off the free beach on Lungomare Grazia Deledda: athletes line up by predicted swim time and enter the water in small groups. The 3.8 km are split into two loops with a short run across the sand between them. What follows is a transition stretching several hundred metres along the promenade, closer to a walk than to a change of kit.

The bike heads out through the Cervia salt pan nature reserve into the Romagna plain, over Forlimpopoli and up to Bertinoro, then back to the sea, and the whole loop again a second time. The marathon is four flat laps between Cervia and Milano Marittima, run entirely on town asphalt.

Those laps pass the historic salt warehouse and the San Michele tower, cross Piazza Garibaldi, follow the canal port at Borgo Marina and run down the pine-lined avenues of Milano Marittima. Spectators line almost the whole circuit, and you go past the finish arch three times before you are allowed to turn in. Unless you are among the quickest, the last laps happen in the dark, under floodlights and an announcer calling every finisher by name.

Pacing Strategy

The rolling start spares you the mass start, but it also takes away the draft: you swim in small groups from the first minute and have to find your own rhythm instead of sitting on a field. The low morning sun glares off the water and the Adriatic over the sandy shelf is cloudy, so sight on fixed points ashore and swim deliberately calm. Nothing is won here.

The day is decided on the second bike loop, above all on the way back from the hills to the coast, where the sea breeze regularly comes head on and the field is long since strung out. Ride that stretch without raising your power and the marathon is still yours; try to make up time there and it is gone.

The real trap is the flatness. You pedal almost without pause on this course, no descent hands you a rest, and the total work quietly climbs past what a marathon afterwards will tolerate. The run repeats the same trick in your head: three times past the finish, and three times too early the feeling that it is nearly over.

Training plan for IRONMAN Italy Emilia-Romagna: 12-week build

As an age-group athlete, plan for a race day of roughly ten to fourteen hours. The demand is continuous aerobic work with no real relief windows: the course offers neither long descents nor changes of terrain that break the rhythm for you. Only the two passes through the hills interrupt the uniformity; the rest of the day you hold one position and one cadence.

The race is decided in the last ninety minutes on the bike and in the second half of the marathon. So train back to back: long rides in race position finished with 45 to 75 minutes of running at goal pace. Two medium rides you consistently run off are worth more than one very long ride you do not.

Conditions are a training topic in their own right. September on the Adriatic often stays summery, the salt pans and coastal roads have no shade, and the marathon starts in the warmest hours of the afternoon and ends after dark. Rehearse heat tolerance and your drinking and salt plan over the full race duration, and run in darkness often enough that your sense of pace survives without visual reference.

In the water, prepare for what the rolling start imposes: open water swimming without a group, frequent sighting in poor visibility, and an exit across the sand in the middle of the swim. And treat the transitions as training content rather than an afterthought, because with a zone several hundred metres long a rehearsed routine beats hurry.
