Karnisches Ungetüm: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The KUT80 lives up to its name: the Karnisches Ungetüm gathers around 4,150 metres of climbing over 75 kilometres, and most of the first ascent stands right at the start. From the opening kilometre the course climbs 1,266 metres in one push over six kilometres (HC category) into the Carnic Alps. Then one steep ridge follows another, a point-to-point route for experienced ultra mountain runners.

Course & Elevation

The gun goes at midnight in Sillian, East Tyrol, and from there the Karnisches Ungetüm follows the Karnischer Höhenweg (KHW 403) along the Austrian-Italian border ridge to Kötschach-Mauthen in Carinthia: 75 kilometres and 5,200 metres of climbing, point to point across high alpine terrain, with more descent than ascent overall because the finish sits lower than the start.

The course states its intentions immediately. From kilometre 0.5 the first climb gains roughly 1,270 metres over six kilometres at an average gradient above 20 percent, taking you up to the border ridge by headlamp. Once on the crest, the terrain never relents: barely five percent of the distance is flat, while around 60 percent is either steep up or steep down. Substantial counter-climbs follow, among them 453 metres of gain at kilometre 27 and another 441 metres at kilometre 49, both with sections far beyond 20 percent.

The field is capped at 150 runners and the cutoff is 20 hours. Six staffed mountain huts along the Höhenweg serve as aid stations, from the Sillianerhütte to the Wolayerseehütte. The combination of technical ground, long exposure on the ridge and a full night section places this run among the most demanding ultratrails Austria has to offer.

Pacing Strategy

The behemoth bares its teeth immediately: the HC climb from kilometre 0.5 delivers 1,266 metres over a good six kilometres at 20%; nothing is decided here, but many races break exactly here. Walk this ascent from the first metre at an intensity you won't regret five hours in. After it, little stays flat: only 5.5% of the course is level, while two category-2 climbs at kilometres 27 and 49 (each over 440 metres) and several steep short ramps stack up.

The second of those big climbs at kilometre 49 decides the race, because the legs are long tired by then. With over 32% steep descent and an August start, descending technique and heat management matter too; eat and drink consistently from the start.

The trap is an over-ambitious opening climb; reach the top with reserves intact and you gain real time in the second half.

Training plan for Karnisches Ungetüm: 12-week build

Budget for 14 to 20 hours of moving time as an age-group runner; the cutoff sits at exactly 20. The Karnisches Ungetüm is a long, almost entirely aerobic effort whose difficulty lies less in speed than in terrain: with around 60 percent of the course pitching steeply up or down, you will rarely run in the classic sense, but climb powerfully and descend under control.

The first training priority is steep hiking. The opening ascent, 1,270 metres of gain at an average above 20 percent, is decided by the efficiency of your powerhiking, ideally trained with poles in long mountain sessions of 800 to 1,500 vertical metres in one block. The second priority is descending on tired legs: roughly 4,500 metres of downhill, a third of it steep, will wreck unprepared quads long before the finish. Eccentric strength work and deliberately long training descents belong in your programme for months, not weeks.

Third comes the night. A midnight start means the biggest climb happens entirely in darkness, against your sleep rhythm. Several headlamp runs, at least one of them on alpine terrain, take the edge off that situation. Back-to-back long mountain days on weekends build the fatigue resistance that 14-plus hours demand.

Finally, rehearse your fuelling logistics. The six huts are far apart in places, and between them you are self-supported. Practise eating under load early and often, and test your gear and weather protection at altitude, because conditions on the border ridge can turn rough even in August.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
