Lausanne Marathon: Course, Route Profile & Map

The Lausanne Marathon is a lakeshore race. It drops off the Place de Milan above the city down to Lake Geneva, then runs almost 40 kilometres along the water through the terraced vineyards of the Lavaux to Vevey and back. There is no steep ramp anywhere and the course loses height on balance. Preparing for it means training speed endurance on rolling flat ground, not climbing form.

Course & Elevation

The start sits at 413 metres on the Place de Milan. The opening kilometre still rises a little, then the course drops some forty metres down to the Quai d'Ouchy by kilometre two, passing the Olympic Museum. From there it follows the northern shore of Lake Geneva eastwards the whole way: Pully, Paudex, Lutry, then Villette, Grandvaux, Cully, Epesses, Rivaz and St-Saphorin, before the turn at Vevey just past twenty kilometres sends you back along the same lakeside road.

The profile is flat but never level. About two thirds of the distance counts as flat and the remainder is short swells of a few metres each, the kind a shore road between vineyards and water inevitably has. Only one section registers as a climb: at kilometre 23, shortly after the turnaround, the road pulls out of the lakeside village for roughly 350 metres at close to five percent. Everything else is decided by rhythm rather than by strength.

The surface is asphalt throughout, on quays and shore roads, with the UNESCO vineyard terraces of the Lavaux as the backdrop. The finish is on the Esplanade de Bellerive right at the water at 374 metres, a good forty metres below the start. Lausanne has had its marathon since 1993, the year the Olympic Museum opened, and the specialist press already ranked it among the world's twenty most beautiful marathons in 1995. The field has been capped since 2017; the most recent edition drew around 14,400 adults across all distances.

Pacing Strategy

The most expensive mistake happens in the first three kilometres. After the short rise out of the Place de Milan the road falls forty metres to the lake, and with a 10:05 start and fresh legs you will almost inevitably run ten to fifteen seconds per kilometre too fast there. On a course without mountains that time cannot be won back later, it only gets paid for.

Between kilometre 3 and the turn at Vevey the job is evenness. The shore road rolls in small swells, each one harmless, but together they drain you if you attack every crest. Hold effort rather than pace and let the watch drift a few seconds over the rises.

The race is decided between kilometre 23 and 35. The only genuine ramp of the day comes right after the turnaround, roughly 350 metres at close to five percent, and then the Lavaux swells come a second time, now with thirty kilometres in your legs. If you still have something left there, the final eight flat kilometres along the quay bring you home. Expect open lake wind head-on or from the side on that closing stretch and run in a group if you can.

Training plan for Lausanne Marathon: 12-week build

For a committed age-group runner the effort lasts somewhere between three and four and a half hours. The character is markedly steady aerobic work: no climb forces an anaerobic spike, but you hold a narrow pace window for hours. That is the real demand here, because a flat course punishes pacing errors harder than a hilly one does.

The emphasis therefore belongs on progressively longer runs at marathon pace and on long sessions with a fast finish. Fifteen to twenty kilometres at goal rhythm at the end of a long run reproduces exactly the situation the course puts you in between kilometre 25 and 35.

Two things need deliberate work. First, running downhill: the opening two kilometres give away forty metres, and if you have not practised that you pay for it with quadriceps damage that only shows after thirty kilometres. Build controlled descents into your long runs. Second, the short ramp after the turnaround, which feels surprisingly hard in a race with no gradients: single 300 to 500 metre rises run at marathon pace on tired legs cover it.

Late October on Lake Geneva means mild rather than cold, but damp. Expect morning mist over the water, cloud that lifts through the morning and wind running along the axis of the lake. Rehearse your race and fuelling routine at ten to fourteen degrees, and test your kit for a start where you do not really warm up for the first hour.
