The adidas Manchester Marathon is Britain's second-largest marathon and one of its flattest: 42 kilometres that never leave the narrow band between 23 and 50 metres above sea level and contain no climb worth the name. From the start on Chester Road beside Old Trafford to the finish on Oxford Road, this is a pure pacing exercise – which is exactly why it is one of the best-known personal-best courses in the country.

Course & Elevation

The race starts in waves on Chester Road beside Old Trafford, between Manchester United's stadium and the Bridgewater Canal. The opening five kilometres run as a loop east towards Castlefield and Hulme and back again – the only excursion into the city centre before the course turns southwest for a long stretch. Chester Road, Talbot Road and Washway Road then carry you out through Stretford and Sale, steadily away from the city.

The heart of the race is a long out-and-back through the Trafford suburbs. Brooklands Road and Park Road take you to Timperley, which you see twice, once outbound and once on the way home; the turn comes at half marathon distance on Stockport Road in Hale, on the edge of Altrincham. Coming back you follow Marsland Road, Broad Road and Dane Road through Sale and Sale Moor. These are quiet, gently curving residential streets with tram stops and front gardens – unremarkable to look at, but lined with residents the whole way, and the organiser itself points out that this is where the wall usually arrives, at miles 18 to 19 on Broad Road.

From kilometre 33 the course comes back up Chester Road through Stretford, turns into Chorlton on Edge Lane and Wilbraham Road, and runs through Whalley Range and Old Trafford on Upper Chorlton Road and Chorlton Road. The last kilometres go along Stretford Road into Hulme and finally onto Oxford Road: the finish sits in front of the University of Manchester by Brunswick Park, in the middle of the city and about three kilometres as the crow flies from the start – a genuine point-to-point course, not a loop.

Pacing Strategy

Just under 77 per cent of the course is flat, there is nothing steep on it at all, and the difference between the lowest and highest point is 27 metres across the whole distance. There is no section where you can save energy or win it back – the plan is an even kilometre split from the first to the forty-second, and your goal pace is your race pace from the gun. The one place where the course takes that out of your hands is the city-centre loop over the opening five kilometres: a dense field, loud crowds at Deansgate and fresh legs routinely cost 10 to 15 seconds per kilometre too much there.

The race is decided between kilometres 24 and 35, on the way back from Altrincham through Timperley and Sale. The noisy points are at the beginning and the end; out here it goes quiet, the roads are long and straight, and the Mersey valley leaves them open to the wind. Up to this point the course has offered no change of terrain to unload the legs – the demand has been identical for two hours, and anyone who ran the early kilometres too fast loses time here, a second at a time, without anything changing in the profile.

The real trap is therefore the flatness itself. A course without climbs invites you to treat race pace as free, and then punishes an over-optimistic goal time without mercy, because there is no climb to hide a slower section behind. Add mid-April: cool mornings, often damp, and occasionally a strong westerly on the open A56 straights – plus a long wait in the start area because of the wave starts, which is what throwaway layers are for.

As an age-group runner, expect two and a half to five and a half hours; the last person across the start line has at least six hours, and anyone who falls behind six-hour pace is asked onto the pavement but stays supported and still finishes. The demand is unusually uniform: aerobic throughout, with no anaerobic spikes and no change in loading. That is comfortable for pacing and hard on the body, because the same stride works the same structures for 42 kilometres.

Preparation therefore centres on sustained speed on the flat and on specific resistance to fatigue. Weekly threshold sessions and long runs with 8 to 15 kilometres at marathon goal pace at the end reproduce the decisive phase of the race: running goal pace with two hours already in the legs. Progressive long runs, with race pace at the back rather than the front, are worth more on this course than any hill session.

Two things are easy to overlook on a flat course and belong in the plan. First, volume on hard tarmac rather than soft ground – no variation in terrain also means no relief, and long runs on road are how you prepare for it. Second, fuelling on the move: on a course without climbs there is no section where you can slow down for free, so you need to be able to take a drink at race pace.

Conditions shape the final weeks too. A mid-April date puts the hard training blocks in winter and early spring; deliberately keep sessions in wet, cold and windy weather, because the long straights between Sale and Altrincham offer no shelter. And with up to 52,000 participants going off in waves, it is worth practising running in a crowded field and shifting your breakfast routine to a late start time.
