Marathon Bresse Dombes: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The Marathon Bresse Dombes is a countryside marathon shaped like a figure of eight: from medieval Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne past the ponds of the Dombes, through the Bresse to Vonnas and back. The profile rolls but never turns mountainous; what it demands is patience in the first half and strength for the gently rising return.

Course & Elevation

The start is at the racecourse in Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne. The first half runs past the ponds of the Dombes to the central point of the figure of eight at Neuville-les-Dames, then along the lanes of the Bresse to Vonnas, home of chef Georges Blanc. As far as that the course trends downhill from just over 250 to about 190 metres; the only steep section is a short pitch at kilometre 6, almost 7 percent over 400 metres.

From Vonnas at kilometre 21 the marathon runs back together with the half, and now it climbs again: several short rises between kilometres 23 and 26, a second steep pitch at kilometre 30 much like the one at kilometre 6, and on to the high point of around 270 metres at kilometre 39. From there the course drops into the old town.

The finish is on the Champ de Foire in the centre of Châtillon, reached through the Porte de Villars and past the market halls, with several châteaux along the way. The race is deliberately festive: costumes are encouraged, gourmet stands sit alongside the eleven aid stations, and the sixth edition in 2026 drew a record of more than 5,500 entries across all distances. The 2027 course is not yet published; the course shown is the 2026 one.

Pacing Strategy

The first half is seductive. It trends downhill, the field is fresh and the festive atmosphere pushes you along. Run to target pace on the watch here and you are actually working harder than the return leg can afford. Keep it deliberately easy to Vonnas and take the steep pitch at kilometre 6 with short steps, walking if needed.

The marathon is decided between kilometres 23 and 39. That is where the course gathers most of its climbing, spread over many short rises and the second steep pitch at kilometre 30. Expect slower kilometres on this section at the same effort.

The trap is trying to make up time early on the return, when the half-marathon field joins and the running gets busier. Let the half marathoners go and save your strength for kilometres 30 to 39.

Training plan for Marathon Bresse Dombes: 12-week build

For most age-group runners the marathon takes between 3:30 and 5:30 hours; the limit is seven hours, with cut-offs at Vonnas and Neuville-les-Dames. The load is a long aerobic run that gets harder in the second half, because that is where the course climbs again.

Your long runs should therefore be on rolling ground and put the hills in the second part, not the first. A 30 kilometre long run with the last 10 kilometres on hilly roads at marathon pace is the key session.

Short, steep hill sprints prepare you for the two pitches at kilometres 6 and 30. Since part of the course runs on lanes and paths rather than asphalt, training on firm farm tracks pays off too.

The race is held at the end of April, so the build-up runs through winter into a spring race day. Use the aid stations every 3 to 5 kilometres, and test in training what you can stomach from the gourmet stands before relying on them on race day.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
