Marseille-Cassis is not a flat 20 km road race but a mountain-pass run. From the Orange Vélodrome the course climbs in one long drag to the Col de la Gineste at just over 330 metres, then crosses twelve kilometres of the Calanques national park and finishes in the vineyards above Cassis. Attack the climb too hard and the second half never runs freely again.
Course & Elevation
The start is on the Boulevard Michelet beside the Orange Vélodrome, twelve metres above the sea. The first three kilometres barely tilt upwards, then short ramps start stacking up, and past the Luminy university campus the real climb begins at kilometre 5.75: 3.3 kilometres averaging 5.4 percent with pitches close to 19 percent, 176 metres of gain in one piece. A final 600-metre kicker at six percent tops out at kilometre 9.9 on the Col de la Gineste at 331 metres.
What follows is not a straight descent. The course sheds height quickly to kilometre 12, then runs three kilometres across a rolling plateau between roughly 240 and 260 metres before dropping steeply towards Cassis from kilometre 15.5 to 17.6. And then it climbs again: a good kilometre back up to 125 metres before the finish at 101 metres. The ledger reads 405 metres of ascent against 316 of descent – a net 89 metres up over 20 kilometres.
Twelve of the twenty kilometres run inside the Calanques national park, the only urban national park in Europe, home to 200 protected species. The surface is road throughout, most of it the pass road over the Gineste, and the finish is not down at the port of Cassis but on the high ground above the town, in the middle of the Provence vineyards. André Giraud founded the race in 1979 with barely 700 starters; the 47th edition, on the last Sunday in October, brings 20,000 runners to the line with around 800 volunteers behind them.
Pacing Strategy
The first five kilometres are the most dangerous. They rise only gently, waves leave every eight minutes from nine o'clock, and in a dense field on the wide Boulevard Michelet almost any pace feels easy. This is where the race is decided: run the opening kilometres at goal race pace and you arrive at the foot of the Gineste already behind your own breathing.
The climb from kilometre 5.75 is the race-deciding section. For most runners 3.3 kilometres at 5.4 percent means 20 to 30 minutes well above half-marathon intensity if you insist on holding pace – and you should not. Run a steady effort just under threshold instead, deliberately shortening your stride on the pitches up to 19 percent, rather than a steady pace that pushes you anaerobic by the gradient alone.
The second trap sits beyond the summit. The descent invites you to take everything back; your quadriceps pay for it on the rolling plateau between kilometre 12 and 15, and certainly on the final climb. That last uphill kilometre from 17.6 arrives after almost three kilometres of fast downhill and meets legs set up for descending. Keep something deliberately in reserve for it – the finish is up in the vineyards, not down at the port.

Find a gradient you can run uphill for 20 to 30 minutes without a break and train there at threshold – not as short hard hill reps, but as one or two blocks of 15 to 25 minutes. Varying gradients between three and ten percent model the Gineste far better than a uniform ramp, and the steepest pitches are best rehearsed with a shortened stride and higher cadence.
The second emphasis is downhill running. The course sheds around 230 metres between kilometre 10 and 17.6, some of it steep, and then still asks for a kilometre of climbing. Build in descending runs with real eccentric load, and finish at least one long session with a short climb so that the downhill-to-uphill switch on tired legs is familiar.
Finally the conditions: this is late October, on tarmac, with twelve kilometres through the open limestone terrain of the Calanques national park and little meaningful shade. Rehearse fuelling for an effort under two and a half hours, choose racing shoes with enough cushioning to survive the long descent, and put at least one session on the same hard road surface rather than training exclusively on soft ground.
