Mosttour MTB Marathon: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

For 2027 the Extrem distance of the Mosttour MTB Marathon in Kürnberg remains the day's toughest loop: 60 kilometres and 2,575 metres of climbing over very steep terrain, ridden twice in the race. At over 40 metres of climbing per kilometre, that means short, brutal ramps to over 27 percent -- and doing them a second time on tired legs.

Course & Elevation

The course is unchanged from the prior year's edition: the same organiser GPX recording used in 2026 is still online and unmodified since April 2024. It is raced in a multi-lap format, with an opening loop followed by three full race rounds on the circuit around Kürnberg, each round stringing together a dense sequence of short, steep climbs.

The profile offers almost no respite: barely 5 percent of the course is flat. The longest climb stretches over 2.8 kilometres with ramps to 27.6 percent and 277 metres of gain, plus a chain of shorter stabs of 70 to 160 metres each that feel heavier with every lap.

The Mosttour remains embedded in a full festival weekend with children's races, a bike biathlon and a traditional Sunday morning gathering. Two fan zones along the course mean riders pass through pockets of noise several times per race.

Pacing Strategy

The course remains among the steepest in the field: over 27 percent of it climbs sharply, as much drops sharply. The key mountain from kilometre 26 drags on nearly three kilometres at ten percent with ramps to 27 percent, and on the Extrem you ride this loop twice -- that's where the race is decided.

Ride the first lap clearly under your limit and eat early and often. On the steep descents you gain time with skill, not force; the second ascent of the key climb settles the race.

Training plan for Mosttour MTB Marathon: 12-week build

For 60 kilometres with 2,575 metres of climbing on a steep circuit, plan for an effort of roughly three and a half to five hours. The character remains unmistakably interval-like: short, hard climbs above threshold followed by technical descents.

What decides the race is repetition: the 2.8 kilometre key section returns on every race round, and your final pass through it determines your position.

So train climbing strength for steep ramps (intervals of three to eight minutes on gradients of 8 percent and more), long rides of three to four hours packed with short climbs, and descending technique on tired legs. Rehearse eating and drinking at high intensity too, because an energy deficit in round three cannot be fixed on a profile like this.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
