MOUNTAINMAN Reit im Winkl.

The XXL-Trail is the longest course at the MOUNTAINMAN Reit im Winkl and the only one with an extra loop: after some 20 kilometres in the Chiemgau you are back where you began, and only then does the full XL circuit start. Preparing for it is less about the distance than about still being able to climb at km 50.

MOUNTAINMAN Reit im Winkl 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The extra loop belongs to this distance alone, and it starts without a run-up. One kilometre in, the course gains around 350 metres in just under two and a half kilometres, the steepest sustained climb of all five courses, and another 300 metres soon follow, up to about 1,270 metres. The loop then falls almost steadily for more than twelve kilometres and returns to where you began.

From there you run the XL-Trail course. At km 23 the longest single climb starts, nearly 500 metres in a little over five kilometres, and between km 35 and 43 two further steps lift you past 1,400 metres. The high point comes late: only around km 56 do you reach just under 1,600 metres, followed by almost 900 metres of descent in nine kilometres. At km 65 one short, very steep ramp of a little over 200 metres remains before the final kilometres lead back to Reit im Winkl.

The day is spent on marked forest and mountain trails in the Chiemgau. Eight aid points divide it, the first at km 11. Two long gaps fall exactly on the big ascents: km 20 to 32 and km 40 to 53.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace MOUNTAINMAN Reit im Winkl.

Start

Start under control

The first 20 kilometres are the approach, even though they hold the steepest metres of the day. Hike both climbs of the loop from the very start, while your legs still want to run, and let the long descent afterwards roll without pushing. Back where you began, you should feel as if the race has only just started.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The day is decided between km 48 and 65. The climb to the high point arrives with around 2,000 metres already in your legs, and the descent after it demands whatever your quads have left. Climb evenly and stay loose downhill here and you gain more time in the last quarter than the first half could ever give you.

Finish

Spend what is left

The trap sits at km 20. You come off a long descent with momentum, feel good and run into the km 23 climb too fast, with no aid point until km 32. Take food and drink for twelve kilometres there and start that climb more slowly than feels necessary.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for MOUNTAINMAN Reit im Winkl: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

Age-group athletes are out for roughly 10 to 15 hours here. Less than a tenth of the course is flat and nearly everything else is climbing or braking. That makes it a long aerobic effort without a steady rhythm, one in which your quads reach their limit before your heart and lungs do.

Core

Train race pace

The decisive phase only starts past halfway, so train exactly that state: climbing tired. Two long mountain sessions on consecutive days mirror it better than one giant run. Put most of the second day's ascent at the end, because in the race too more than 500 metres are still to come after km 48.

Specific

Rehearse the course

Almost half the course runs downhill, and nearly a quarter of the total is steep. Build long descents into your sessions on purpose and add strength work for the quads. Anyone who only learns in the race what 900 metres of descent feel like on tired legs loses the final 20 kilometres. Practise steep hiking at the start of a session as well, because the first climb comes right after the gun and must still cost you nothing.

Race week

Arrive fresh

The date of 25 September puts your longest sessions in summer. Use them to practise eating and drinking on the climbs: some aid points are twelve kilometres or more and several hundred metres of ascent apart, which for many means two hours or longer living off what you carry.
