Coelmo Napoli City Half Marathon: Course, Route Profile & Map
The Coelmo Napoli City Half Marathon starts and finishes at the Mostra d'Oltremare in Fuorigrotta and runs the waterfront of the Gulf of Naples in between. Two genuine road tunnels, each crossed twice, connect the inland district to the coast and provide the only rises worth the name on an otherwise flat and very fast course.
Course & Elevation
The start is inside the Mostra d'Oltremare, the exhibition grounds of Fuorigrotta, and the opening kilometres run Viale Kennedy, Piazzale Tecchio, Via Giulio Cesare and Via Fuorigrotta. Fuorigrotta sits inland behind the Posillipo ridge, and the link to the coast is the Galleria Laziale, a road tunnel driven under the hill. On the far side the course emerges at Mergellina, right at the water.
Then comes the section people run this race for: Via Francesco Caracciolo, the car-free promenade on the gulf, with Piazza Vittoria at its end. The Galleria della Vittoria, the second tunnel, carries the route under Monte Echia into the port: Via Acton, Via Cristoforo Colombo, Via Nuova Marina and Via Amerigo Vespucci run east past quays and ferry terminals to a turn at Via Alessandro Volta. The way back goes through Piazza Bovio and a stretch up Corso Umberto I, turning at the Piazza Nicola Amore corner, then Piazza Municipio and the same two tunnels in reverse to Fuorigrotta.
The profile is flat with a clear structure: 102 metres of ascent over the certified 21.097 kilometres, 68 percent flat terrain and a single categorised climb of just under 900 metres at three percent at kilometre 18, the return over the ridge to Fuorigrotta. The race holds a World Athletics label, a five-star European Athletics rating and a FIDAL Gold label; in 2026 it sold out at 10,000 starters from 117 nations, 52 percent of them from abroad, and Yeman Crippa ran an Italian record 59:01 here.
Pacing Strategy
This course is fast but not uniform, and the difference decides the race. The first five kilometres out of Fuorigrotta and through the Galleria Laziale rise gently before dropping to the coast, and insisting on goal pace there means working above threshold without noticing. Run that first tunnel section on effort and let the watch fall behind over the opening two kilometres.
The fastest part is the waterfront between Mergellina and the port. Here the course is flat, wide and open, and this is where the time is made, though also where the wind is felt, because the Caracciolo has no shelter from the gulf. Find a group for both the outward and the return leg, since you run each direction once.
The race is decided from kilometre 18. The climb back over the Posillipo ridge to Fuorigrotta is moderate at three percent, but it is nearly a kilometre long and it lands exactly where a half marathon has nothing left to give. Hold the effort constant rather than the pace, and note that GPS and heart rate both drop out in each tunnel: in the bores you run by feel, and afterwards the watch reads short.
Training plan for Coelmo Napoli City Half Marathon: 12-week build
For most age-group runners the Coelmo Napoli City Half Marathon takes between an hour and a half and two and a half hours. The demand is largely steady and aerobic close to threshold, but with two tunnel ramps early and one late the course is not quite flat: 102 metres of ascent and 68 percent level ground.
Threshold work is the backbone: tempo runs of 8 to 14 kilometres and long intervals of 2,000 to 4,000 metres, plus a weekly long run of 90 to 120 minutes. Because seventeen of the 21 kilometres are essentially level, threshold performance translates almost directly into finishing time.
The course-specific stimulus is the climb at the end. An 800 to 1,000 metre rise at three to four percent, repeated three or four times at the end of a tempo run, reproduces the return over the ridge to Fuorigrotta exactly; anyone who only knows it on fresh legs underestimates it at kilometre 18. Wind and group work on open waterfronts is worth adding for the long coastal section.
On conditions: late February in Naples is mild, which is good racing weather, but wind off the gulf is the real factor on the unsheltered Caracciolo. The two tunnels are the second: warm, loud, without GPS and with a change of surface at the portals. Run a few sessions deliberately without checking the watch, so that pacing in the bores is not guesswork.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
