Course & Elevation

Start and finish are at Pier Park on Front Beach Road, with the awards and the after-party at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville next door. The course heads east from the park parallel to the beaches towards the Thomas Drive area, turns after a little over ten kilometres and returns to the start; then the same out-and-back is run a second time.

The profile is as flat as a marathon gets: the whole course stays between about 6 and 11 metres above sea level, with not a single climb worth the name. The turnarounds and every mile are signed, and water and Powerade are available at every mile marker.

One thing stands out: traffic. The course is not closed, and you run with the flow of traffic. The organiser notes that traffic is light in December but always present. The time limit is six hours.

Pacing Strategy

On a course this flat only evenness decides. Settle into your target pace from the start and hold it; there is no climb to slow you and no descent to gain time on.

The structure of two identical laps is both help and trap. The first lap feels easy because every mile is signed and the half-marathon field runs with you from half an hour later. Adopt the half marathoners' pace here and you pay for it on the second lap, when the course empties out.

Use the turnarounds as a check: if you are clearly slower at the same points on the second lap, the first was too fast. Build your fuelling around the mile stations.

Training plan for Powerade Panama City Beach Marathon: 12-week build

Depending on your level, expect three to six hours. The effort is a classic, steady road marathon: almost purely aerobic, with no climbs to break the rhythm.

The foundation is long runs of up to 30 to 35 kilometres on flat tarmac and marathon-pace sections that you extend through the build. Precisely because the course offers no variety, it pays to run long sections at exactly the same pace and train your feel for it.

Practise the turns: two turnarounds per lap mean slowing and restarting four times. Train drinking on the move at quick stations too, since water and Powerade are offered at every mile.

The race is held in early December by the sea. If you are coming from a cold winter, plan a few runs in warmer clothing, and because the road stays open, attention to traffic is part of the preparation.
