Primiero Dolomiti Marathon.

The Primiero Dolomiti Marathon is a trail marathon through the valleys of Primiero inside the Paneveggio–Pale di San Martino natural park, finishing in the village centre of Fiera di Primiero. Its shape defines it: a steep climb to over 1,600 m, a long rolling middle section up high, then a descent that asks more of your quads than any of the climbs before it.

Primiero Dolomiti Marathon 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The course runs point to point and loses a net 300 m or so. The start goes straight uphill, almost 2.5 km gaining about 170 m. The real test of the first third begins at km 8.5: over a little more than two kilometres you climb more than 260 m at close to 12 percent on average, with ramps far steeper than that. From there you stay high for a long time, between roughly 1,450 and 1,680 m, on an up and down with no real recovery. At km 22.7 comes the last serious climb, a steep kilometre and a bit up to the highest point of the day.

Around km 29 the race turns over. About 850 m of descent separate you from the finish, most of it in the first six kilometres down, broken only by a short rise at km 34. The final kilometres out into the valley flatten and run faster.

The footing keeps changing: forest roads make up just over a third, tarmac almost another third, and the rest is split between narrow trail and old mule tracks. The race, now in its twelfth edition, is organised by the club U.S. Primiero ASD, and it finishes right in the centre of Fiera di Primiero.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Primiero Dolomiti Marathon.

Start

Start under control

Split the race into three blocks. The steep climb from km 8.5 is a hiking section for almost everyone outside the front of the field: power-walking the steepest ramps costs very little time and saves strength for the roughly 20 km you then spend up high. That middle section decides whether you stay even. The constant up and down tempts you to run every little rise; run on feel instead and walk wherever your heart rate spikes.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The biggest trap is the descent from km 29. Overspend in the middle and you arrive with tired legs at exactly the point where the course allows the most speed, then brake your way stiffly down the steep kilometres. Keep something in reserve for this stretch; even the short rise at km 34 costs more than it looks on battered legs.

Finish

Spend what is left

Aid stations come roughly every four to five kilometres. Eat and drink early and often so the long descent does not drain what is left.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Primiero Dolomiti Marathon: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

For most age-group runners this marathon takes somewhere between four and a half and seven hours. The effort is mostly aerobic but restless: steep climbs push your heart rate up in bursts, while the forest roads and tarmac stretches ask for long, steady running. On top of that, roughly 1,500 m of descent does more muscle damage than the 1,200 m of climbing.

Core

Train race pace

Two sections decide the race: the steep climb from km 8.5, which demands strength while hiking, and the descent from km 29, which asks for quick, sure steps after almost 30 km of work. Train steep uphill hiking with hands on thighs, and structure your long runs so that the descending comes at the end rather than the start.

Specific

Rehearse the course

Eccentric strength is the focus many runners underrate. Downhill repeats, squats and lunges with a slow lowering phase, and regular long downhill stretches in your training runs prepare your quads for the last 13 km. Because tarmac makes up almost a third of the course, your legs should also know hard ground late in a long effort.

Race week

Arrive fresh

The race is held in early July in the Dolomites, with long stretches between 1,400 and 1,700 m. Practise fuelling in long sessions exactly as you plan to race it, and choose trail shoes that work on mule tracks as well as on tarmac.
