The Bournemouth Half Marathon runs the festival's old marathon route: from Hengistbury Head along the Southbourne clifftops, down onto the beach promenade and into the finish at Pier Approach. Its 85 metres of climbing sit almost entirely in one ramp at kilometre 13 – after that it is six flat kilometres beside the water. A personal-best course, if you can handle wind.

Course & Elevation

You start up on Hengistbury Head, the headland between Poole Bay and Christchurch Bay. The first two kilometres lift the course from four to 26 metres onto the cliff edge, and from there it runs five kilometres along Southbourne Overcliff Drive and Boscombe Overcliff Drive on a plateau between 26 and 36 metres, open sea to your right.

At kilometre eight the route drops to sea level inside 500 metres and joins the Undercliff promenade. Three and a half flat kilometres at four to five metres follow – and immediately after them, at kilometre 12.9, comes the only real climb of the day: 430 metres at 5.9 per cent on average, briefly over ten, 25 metres of gain back up onto the overcliff. Up top, East Overcliff Drive passes the Russell-Cotes Museum before the course falls to the water a second time.

The final five and a half kilometres stay between four and six metres, and they are what this race actually is: the course runs out and back along the wooden boards of two piers – Boscombe first, then Bournemouth Pier, whose original structure dates from 1856 – with the promenade and its blue-flag beaches in between. The finish stands at Pier Approach. Roads are closed, and because the start sits far out on the headland, shuttle buses take the field out of town first on an October morning.

Pacing Strategy

The course is flat on balance – two metres between start and finish – but it is not even. Almost 75 per cent of it sits in the flat band, and the rest is concentrated in the opening two-kilometre rise and the ramp at kilometre 13. Do not race the first climb, just get through it: it arrives before you have found any rhythm at all, and the plateau then gives you five quiet kilometres to settle at goal pace.

The race is decided at kilometre 12.9. On paper 430 metres at just under six per cent looks harmless, but it comes after three and a half kilometres of flat promenade on which your legs have locked into a fixed cadence. Push through it at race pace and you lose more at the top than the climb is worth – shorten up, open again over the crest, and use the two overcliff kilometres that follow to recover.

The trap comes afterwards. From kilometre 15.8 the course is dead flat to the line, and flat here means nothing sets your pace for you. On an exposed south-coast promenade the wind decides the day, not the gradient – into a headwind there is no shelter at all over the last six kilometres. Add four 180-degree turns on the two piers, whose wooden boards can be damp in October: brake and re-accelerate cleanly rather than carrying speed through them. There are no pacers at this race; you run your own splits.

Training plan for Run Bournemouth: 12-week build

As an age-group runner, expect somewhere between 80 minutes and just under three hours. The demand is aerobic and remarkably uniform for most of it: one climb, one descent, and long stretches before and after in which nothing but you holds the pace. A half marathon without terrain changes is mentally harder than its profile suggests.

Two sections deserve specific work. The ramp at kilometre 13 is short, but it falls in the last third of the race and demands that you find flat goal pace again immediately afterwards – train short climbs at the end of long runs and run them out over the crest rather than stopping on top. The course also drops sharply twice, at kilometre eight and kilometre 15, around 25 metres each time: downhill running under fatigue protects your quads for the flat kilometres that follow.

Conditions are the second opponent. Early October on the English south coast means wind across a completely exposed promenade, salt air and, in all likelihood, damp wooden boards on both piers. Run some of your tempo sessions into wind with no shelter, and put one run on a slick surface in the plan so the pier turnarounds do not catch you out.

Beyond that the emphasis is squarely on flat-terrain speed endurance: weekly threshold runs and blocks of five to ten kilometres at goal pace inside your long runs, ideally progressive so that race pace sits at the end. Practise drinking on the move as well – there are water stations and energy gels on course, and a coastal half dehydrates you more than 14 degrees would suggest.
