RunThrough Trails South Downs wastes no time: the 50K leaves Queen Elizabeth Country Park straight up a steep hill, and after that the ground almost never stops rising or falling. The longest of the three distances is decided less by cruising pace than by what your legs still have for the descents and the late ramps.
The loop starts and ends at Queen Elizabeth Country Park in the South Downs National Park, and the opening makes the terms clear: just over 130 metres of gain at nearly 11 percent, followed at once by an equally steep drop back to starting height. The ground alternates between ancient woodland, open chalk downland and sections of the South Downs Way. Barely a tenth of the course is flat, and the rest splits almost evenly into up and down.
A longer, steady climb arrives at km 4.4, then the course stays rolling until the sharpest moment of the day: just before km 16 the trail gains height over 450 metres at almost 17 percent. After that it holds around 220 metres of altitude for several kilometres, the calmest part of the race, before dropping to about 100 metres by km 26.
The hardest phase starts there. Four climbs stack up by km 38, three longer ones and then a short ramp at around 12 percent. The course reaches its lowest point at km 42, but it does not coast home: another 100 metres or so of climbing lead up to km 45, and only then does the loop run down to the park.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
The climb straight after the gun takes away any warm-up, which is exactly why you should walk it rather than run up with the crowd. The 11-hour cut-off leaves room to march every steep ramp on this course. Run where the ground is gentle or level, because there is little of it over the whole distance and those are the metres that buy time.
The race is decided between km 27 and km 38. None of those climbs is big on its own, but they come close together and meet legs that have already absorbed several steep descents. Use the quiet high stretch around km 20 to 24 to eat and drink properly rather than to press on, because a rhythm is hard to find after it.
The biggest trap is the early descents. Nearly half the course falls, and letting go downhill in the first hour because it feels easy gets paid back in your quads on the late drops. Keep something as well for the rise after km 42: it comes just when you have started thinking about the finish.

Age-group runners should expect roughly six to nine hours. That is above all a long aerobic effort, but not an even one: the steep ramps keep kicking your heart rate up for short spells, and the descents load the muscles more than the lungs.
The key phase is the four climbs from km 27, which means climbing after hours of up and down. Build your long runs on hilly trails so that most of the ascent falls in the second half, and add a weekend with two long sessions back to back so you learn how tired legs behave uphill.
Practise fast hiking on gradients above 10 percent as deliberately as running, because nearly every big climb here will ask for it, and short, very steep hills prepare you for the ramp at km 16. Downhill work matters even more: repeated descents, ideally at the end of a long session, toughen the quads for around 1,350 metres of descending and keep your stride tidy late on.
Race day falls at the start of August, so your long runs land in early and high summer. Use them to test food and drink for a day of this length, and run them on woodland and chalk paths like those on the course if you can, so neither footing nor kit comes as a surprise.
