Course & Elevation

The circuit runs on closed city streets around Schwabach's Stadtpark. Start and finish are on Walpersdorfer Straße; from there the course turns onto Angerstraße, through the roundabout into Lindenstraße and along Birkenstraße back to the finishing straight. That gives one roundabout and several tight direction changes per lap, all on asphalt.

Elevation barely matters. After Angerstraße the road rises about nine metres over roughly 400 metres, then drops gently along Lindenstraße and Birkenstraße back to Walpersdorfer Straße. Over 30 laps that adds up to around 330 metres, felt more as a slightly draggy section before the run back to the line than as a climb.

The race around the park has history: in 1950 Fritz Neuser, whose name the prize now carries, won his first amateur race here, and he went on to win it three times. Today RC Herpersdorf and TV 1848 Schwabach run the weekend together, and the Masters open the block of licensed races on Saturday around midday after the youth classes.

Pacing Strategy

Expect a little over an hour of racing and a rhythm that repeats every one and a half kilometres: a hard effort out of the roundabout, a short push over the gentle rise into Lindenstraße, rolling downhill, and another hard effort out of the corners onto the finishing straight.

On each points lap the first four across all three age classes score, but results are kept separately. You race the whole field for points and your own class for the title. Watch early who from your age group is riding near the front instead of chasing every sprint by a younger rider.

The classic trap is position. At the back you brake harder into every corner and accelerate harder out of it, and over 30 laps that costs more than any turn on the front. The commissaires may pull riders who have fallen hopelessly behind, so letting a gap open is not an option.

Training plan for Schwabacher Stadtparkrennen: 12-week build

The effort lasts about 60 to 75 minutes depending on pace and is plainly intermittent: not a steady threshold ride but countless short efforts above threshold with rolling sections in between. The gentle rise into Lindenstraße is no climb, but it comes every lap straight after the roundabout and stretches the acceleration there.

The points laps and the final laps decide the race. Train repeated sprints of ten to 20 seconds from a rolling speed with short, incomplete recoveries, and put some of them at the end of long rides so you can still produce them on lap 25.

Bike handling matters as much. A circuit with a roundabout and tight corners asks for a clean line, fixed braking points and calm riding in a bunch. Practise tight corners and accelerating out of them until both happen automatically.

Early October in Franconia can be cool, and the roads may be damp. Plan your warm-up and clothing for it, and do some cornering practice on wet asphalt so you know how much grip you have on race day.
