Semi-Marathon du Massif Forestier de Nuaillé.

The Nuaillé Half Marathon is a road race in the middle of a forest: a single loop takes you from the village near Cholet onto the closed roads of the Nuaillé-Chanteloup forest massif, three quarters of it under trees. The profile is flat with long, barely visible rises, the field is big and quick, and the race has been run since 1985.

Nuaillé Half Marathon 2027: Course, Route Profile & Map

Start and finish are in Nuaillé, at a little over 130 metres. The first four kilometres lead out of the village and rise almost imperceptibly to about 165 metres, where the course enters the forest. It then drops back almost to its starting level by kilometre 7.

Then comes the long part of the loop: from kilometre 7.5 to kilometre 12 the forest road climbs steadily by a little over 50 metres to the day's high point at just under 190 metres. It stays up there, gently rolling, until kilometre 15, then steps down. From kilometre 18 you run back along the same road you came out on, and the last two and a half kilometres fall gently into the village. About 140 metres of climbing add up, spread over the whole distance; there is nothing on it you would call a hill.

What defines the race is the forest. The roads through the massif are closed for the race, and once out of the village you spend most of your time among trees rather than spectators. The race carries the French federation's Label Route OR, is a qualifier for the French championships and pays prize money to the fastest; the organiser counts more than 3,500 runners across the day's races, with pacers for 1:30 to 2:00.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Nuaillé Half Marathon.

Start

Start under control

On this course the kilometres rise without you seeing it. The first four and the long section from kilometre 7.5 to 12 go gently uphill; run them locked to a pace and you spend more than you notice. Take these stretches on feel and accept that the watch shows a few seconds slower.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The race is decided between kilometres 12 and 18, on the rolling plateau and the steps back down. You are alone in the forest by then, the field has spread out, and pace erodes without any climb to blame. Hold on here and the reward comes over the last two and a half kilometres, which fall slightly and run fast.

Finish

Spend what is left

The trap is the start. The field is large and, with prize money and the OR label, strong, and the flat first metres through the village pull hard. Tuck in with the pacers for your goal time rather than chasing the quick runners. For slower runners: there is a 2:10 cut-off at kilometre 17.

Training plan for Nuaillé Half Marathon: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

For most age-group runners the half marathon takes between 1:25 and 2:30, a steady aerobic effort just below threshold. The course asks for no climbing strength, but for the ability to hold a pace for a long time without fading, even when the road rises imperceptibly.

Core

Train race pace

The race-deciding parts are the long rise to kilometre 12 and the plateau after it. Train for them with tempo runs of 40 to 60 minutes on gently rolling roads, so that you learn to run even effort rather than even pace, and with long runs whose final third is at race pace. That prepares you for the point after kilometre 12 where the race gets hard and the course still lets you run fast afterwards.

Specific

Rehearse the course

The race is in mid-March, so the build-up falls entirely in winter; key sessions happen in the cold and often in the dark. Plan them where you can run steadily. In the forest you race largely without spectators on the day: long runs on your own are the best way to get used to that.

Race week

Arrive fresh

Refreshments are at kilometres 5, 10 and 15, with sponges in between. Practise drinking from a cup on the move in training, so that you never have to stop at the tables.
