The Silk Road Mountain Race is one of the hardest self-supported bikepacking races in the world: around 2,052 kilometres and over 35,000 metres of climbing across the high mountains of Kyrgyzstan, from Talas in the west to the eastern end of Issyk-Kul. There are no stages, no support and no mandated rest, only a route and a clock that never stops.

Course & Elevation
The route starts in Talas at around 1,242 metres and runs point to point eastward across the country. The highest measured point is around 3,926 metres and the lowest is 929 metres, and between them lie the passes that define this race.
The surface is mostly unpaved: gravel tracks, old Soviet roads, high pastures and sections where you push. Resupply points are rare and often hundreds of kilometres apart, and across large parts of the route there is no mobile coverage.
Weather is the second opponent. Above 3,500 metres it can snow within hours in August while the valleys are hot. The 35,362 metres of climbing are not spread evenly, they are concentrated in a small number of very long pass climbs.
Pacing Strategy
In a race of this length, riding power is not what decides it. Sleep management and the ability to make sound decisions while exhausted are. Set a sleep strategy before the start and stick to it through the first week, even when you feel strong.
The pass climbs are long enough that any intensity above an easy endurance range comes back to you over days. Ride the first 500 kilometres deliberately conservatively. Going out hard in Kyrgyzstan does not cost you minutes, it costs you days.
Plan your food around resupply points rather than around days. Always carry a reserve beyond the next reachable resupply, and expect a considerably higher energy requirement in cold and at altitude than you would need at low elevation.
Training plan for Silk Road Mountain Race: 12-week build
Preparation splits into three areas and only one of them is purely athletic. First, endurance over very long durations: several sessions of eight hours or more, ideally as multi-day blocks with short nights in between.
Second, mechanical self-sufficiency. You have to be able to fix tyres, spokes, drivetrain and bearings yourself in cold and darkness, because a workshop may be days away. This deserves to be practised as seriously as any training session.
Third, altitude and cold. If you can, spend time above 3,000 metres before the race. Talk to the coach early about your season plan: a race on this scale needs a build over months and a deliberate recovery phase afterwards, not just a taper before it.
