Course & Elevation

The lap starts on the Hauptmarkt and runs north-west along Fleischstraße, through the alsecon corner into Nagelstraße, on along Fahrstraße with its STEIL corner, and back via Brotstraße and Grabenstraße to the Hauptmarkt.

That lap is covered five times. It lies entirely within the pedestrian zone, so on cobbles and paving rather than carriageway, and it is correspondingly tight: several sharp corners per lap plus open squares where the racing line differs markedly from the centre of the street.

The profile is flat, the course staying inside a band of about two metres. Start pens are staggered by distance, and the finish sits not at the lap transition but a little beyond it on the Hauptmarkt, which lengthens the closing straight.

Pacing Strategy

Five laps of a little over a kilometre give you four split times, and they are unusually informative here because every lap is identical. Deliberately run the first as your second fastest: in a dense field and on cobbles, too hard a start costs more than it gains.

The racing line decides this race. Across the open squares and through the corners the shortest route is materially shorter than the centre of the street, and over five laps that adds up. Taking the corners tight and crossing the squares on the chord saves more metres than any surge on the straights will win.

The trap is the December surface. Cobbles are slippery in the wet or in frost, and a cautious corner exit costs less than a fall. The race is decided on lap four, when the field breaks up; after that only the extended finishing straight on the Hauptmarkt remains.

Training plan for Trier Silvesterlauf: 12-week build

The race takes roughly 14 to 25 minutes depending on your level. Physiologically it sits at or above threshold and is run fast from the first minute; there is no recovery phase.

Despite the flat profile the course is anything but uniform. Several sharp corners per lap, repeated five times, force constant braking and rebuilding, and the cobbled surface additionally demands stability through the ankle and trunk.

The decisive moments are the corner exits on laps four and five, when your legs have already banked the earlier changes of pace.

Suitable training is intervals of two to five minutes at or just above threshold, complemented by short repetitions at race pace. For specific preparation, run on a short town-centre circuit with real corners and, if you can, on cobbles: both train exactly the ability to come out of every bend back at speed without extra cost. And since the race falls at the turn of the year, some of that quality work belongs in the cold season.
