South West Coast 50 Ultra Challenge.

The South West Coast 50 Ultra Challenge leaves the basecamp below Dunster Castle for one big loop through Exmoor and along the South West Coast Path. The hard work of the 50 km sits in the second half: only past 25 km does the course climb to its high point at around 500 metres, and that is the stretch your preparation has to answer.

South West Coast 50 Ultra Challenge 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The first seven kilometres or so run almost level, close to sea level. Two climbs from 6.8 km and 8.5 km then lift you to about 260 metres, the second at around nine percent. Up there the going stays steadier until 15 km, before the course drops more than 200 metres in just over 1.3 km and arrives almost back at sea level. Four flat kilometres later, a short twelve percent climb comes at 21 km.

From 25.6 km begins the part that defines the day. Four climbs follow each other over roughly nine kilometres and add up to nearly 600 metres of gain, the longest of them dragging on for almost three kilometres from 30 km. At 34.6 km you reach the high point at around 500 metres. You stay high until 38 km, give back nearly 300 metres, and then, right where a marathon would end, face the last big climb: 1.7 km at close to eleven percent.

Start and finish are at the basecamp on the Dunster showground, below the castle. The loop links Exmoor with the South West Coast Path, and that switch explains the day: twice you run almost at sea level, and each time the height has to be earned all over again. Rest stops come roughly every 12.5 km, with major stops about every 25.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace South West Coast 50 Ultra Challenge.

Start

Start under control

The first half is the easier one, and the flat opening kilometres tempt you into a pace that turns expensive later. Run them gently enough that you can walk the first two climbs without strain. The steep drop after 15 km is the first test of discipline: spend your quads there and the bill arrives hours later.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The day is decided between 25 and 35 km. The major stop around halfway sits right before this stretch, so take the time you need there, because the course then climbs for nearly ten kilometres with only brief interruptions. Walk the steep sections from the outset instead of waiting until your legs force you to. If you can still break into an easy jog at the top, your pacing was right.

Finish

Spend what is left

The main trap is believing the job is done after the high point. The long descent from 38 km carries you down quickly, yet at 42 km another 180 metres or so of climbing is waiting. Hold something back on the way down. Only after that final climb does the course run almost entirely downhill to the finish, and that is where you can spend whatever is left.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for South West Coast 50 Ultra Challenge: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

Expect roughly six to nine hours depending on fitness and how much you walk. The effort is never even: more than a quarter of the course is steep, up or down, and less than a quarter is flat. What it demands above all is aerobic endurance, broken up by long spells of brisk hiking on the climbs.

Core

Train race pace

Climbing on tired legs is what counts, because the biggest ascents only arrive after 25 km of work. So place the climbing at the end of your long sessions: two to three easy hours on flatter ground, followed by repeated climbs of one to three kilometres. Two long sessions on consecutive days reproduce that pre-fatigue well.

Specific

Rehearse the course

Train going downhill as deliberately as going up. A drop like the one after 15 km cannot be prepared on flat ground, and two more long descents follow the high point. Start with short downhill stretches and gradually move them to the end of long runs, so that your quads are still stable on the final descent.

Race week

Arrive fresh

The July date puts your longest sessions in early summer. A lot of time passes between two rest stops on the steep sections, so practise eating and drinking on the move at exactly that rhythm, and test the kit you plan to wear on race day while you do.
